How the Elo System Works

The Elo system estimates the expected result of a contest by comparing the ratings of two participants. A higher-rated participant is expected to win more often than a lower-rated participant.

After the result, each rating changes according to the difference between the expected score and the actual score. An unexpected victory produces a larger rating change than a victory by the favourite.

The K-factor controls how quickly ratings change. Lower values create a more stable ranking, while higher values react more strongly to recent results.
