Potez X

The Potez X was a French three-engined general-purpose transport aircraft developed in the early 1920s by the Potez company. Designed for colonial service and both civil and military transport roles, the aircraft marked an early attempt to create a reliable multi-engine passenger and cargo platform in post–World War I France.

Development

The Potez X was a large biplane featuring a fixed nosewheel undercarriage with an additional tailskid, an unusual configuration for the era. It was powered by three piston engines: the initial version used three Hispano-Suiza 8Aa V8 engines, each producing 140 hp (104 kW). Two engines were mounted on struts between the wings, and the third was positioned at the nose of the aircraft.

The aircraft had an enclosed cabin for 10 passengers, while the pilot operated the aircraft from an open cockpit located behind the cabin. Later improvements included replacing the original engines with more powerful Hispano-Suiza 8Ab engines for improved performance and range.

The design was further developed into two additional versions: the Potez X B, a military transport variant, and the Potez X C, a civil version with upgraded 280 hp (209 kW) Hispano-Suiza 8Bec engines.

Although relatively few were built, the Potez X formed the basis for subsequent airliner designs, including the Potez XVIII and Potez XXII, both of which retained the triple-engine layout and were aimed at longer-distance commercial routes.

Legacy

Though limited in production, the Potez X contributed to France’s interwar aviation development by providing a flexible and scalable platform adaptable for both civil and military uses. Its design lineage can be traced through subsequent aircraft in the Potez lineup and reflected France’s broader ambitions for global air transport and colonial logistics in the 1920s.
