Authorities in Humphreys County, Tennessee, confirmed on Saturday that there are no survivors following the devastating explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems, an explosives manufacturing plant near McEwen. The cause of the blast remains under investigation, with officials warning that determining what triggered the deadly event could take weeks or even months.
Search and Recovery Operations Continue
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said that more than 300 personnel have searched nearly every square inch of the blast site since the explosion occurred on Friday morning at around 7:45 a.m.
“I can tell you that more than 300 people have been through almost every square inch of this facility, and at this time we’ve recovered no survivors,” Davis said during a press briefing.
Officials have yet to confirm how many people were killed, as identification of remains is still in progress. “We can probably make the assumption — and I hate to use that word — that they are deceased at this point,” Davis said somberly.
Satellite images show that an entire building was obliterated, leaving behind only scattered debris across the surrounding area.
Cause of Explosion Still Unknown
Investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) are working alongside local and state authorities to determine the cause of the blast. Special Agent Guy McCormick from the ATF said that certified explosives specialists and bomb technicians remain on-site to ensure safety and assist in the investigation.
“In a situation like this, what we find is that when these explosives are subject to the event that took place — heat, the explosion, the pressure — they can change, and they can become different than how we know them to act,” McCormick explained.
Officials have not ruled out foul play, though Sheriff Davis emphasized that it could take significant time to draw any conclusions.
Community in Mourning
On Friday evening, residents of nearby Centerville gathered for a vigil to honor the victims. Attendees held candles, prayed, and offered support to affected families.
Resident Felicity Howell, a nurse at Hickman County Middle School, described feeling the shockwave from miles away.
“There was a huge boom and my house shook very hard,” Howell said. “It honestly felt like a vehicle drove through our house. Then we found out it was the explosion, about ten miles down the road.”
Company and State Response
Accurate Energetic Systems stated on Friday, offering “thoughts and prayers” to employees, families, and community members affected by the tragedy. The company, which specializes in the processing of ammunition and explosives, has not provided additional details about the circumstances leading up to the blast.
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) said that there is no ongoing threat to the public but asked residents to stay clear of the area to allow emergency personnel to operate “safely and efficiently.”
TEMA also urged residents who find debris to contact local authorities. “Trained personnel will respond to ensure the safe handling and collection of any debris,” the agency stated.
Federal Agencies Join Investigation
The FBI has joined the ATF and local law enforcement in the ongoing investigation. Officials said their focus remains on recovering remains, supporting affected families, and determining the cause of the explosion.
