U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will impose a 25% tariff on aluminum and steel imports starting Monday. The announcement was made aboard Air Force One as Trump traveled from Florida to New Orleans to attend the Super Bowl final.

“Any steel entering the United States will have a 25% tariff,” Trump told reporters. When asked about aluminum, he confirmed that the new policy would apply to it as well, affecting key trade partners such as Mexico and Canada.

Additionally, Trump stated that he will introduce reciprocal tariffs on imported goods from countries that impose high duties on U.S. products. “If they are charging us 130% and we are not charging them anything, that won’t continue,” he emphasized. These new measures are expected to be officially announced by midweek and implemented “almost immediately” for all trading partners.

During his first term in office (2017-2021), Trump imposed similar tariffs—25% on steel and 10% on aluminum—but later granted tax exemptions to several trade partners, including Canada, Mexico, and Brazil. The return of these tariffs signals a shift back to protectionist trade policies, which could have significant economic and diplomatic implications.

Economic experts warn that such tariffs could increase production costs for American industries reliant on imported metals, while also triggering retaliatory measures from affected countries. However, Trump and his supporters argue that the move is necessary to protect domestic manufacturing and reduce dependency on foreign suppliers.

As the global market reacts to these developments, analysts are closely watching how major U.S. trade partners will respond in the coming days.
