Hollywood is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved and distinctive stars. Diane Keaton, the Academy Award–winning actress whose charm, wit, and authenticity made her a cinematic icon for more than five decades, has died at the age of 79, according to multiple U.S. media reports.
Keaton’s family confirmed her passing to People magazine on Saturday, and a separate source corroborated the news to The New York Times. She is reported to have died in California.
A Career Defined by Originality and Depth
Born in Los Angeles in 1946, Diane Keaton rose to prominence in the early 1970s with her unforgettable portrayal of Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather (1972) and its sequels — a role that cemented her place in film history. But it was her performance in Woody Allen’s romantic comedy Annie Hall (1977) that made her a cultural touchstone. The role earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress and introduced audiences to her signature blend of humor, vulnerability, and unconventional style.
Over the course of her illustrious career, Keaton received four Oscar nominations, all in the Best Actress category. In addition to her win for Annie Hall, she was nominated for Reds (1981), Marvin’s Room (1996), and Something’s Gotta Give (2003).
Keaton’s filmography also includes a string of memorable performances in beloved hits such as Father of the Bride (1991), The First Wives Club (1996), and Baby Boom (1987). Known for her sharp comedic timing and emotional depth, she became one of the few actresses able to seamlessly bridge the gap between drama and comedy.

Tributes from Across Hollywood
Following the news of her death, tributes poured in from colleagues, friends, and fans worldwide.
Her First Wives Club co-star Bette Midler wrote on Instagram:
“The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was… oh, la, lala!”
Actor Ben Stiller also honored her legacy on X (formerly Twitter), calling her:
“One of the greatest film actors ever. An icon of style, humor, and comedy. Brilliant. What a person.”
A Private Life and Enduring Influence
Despite her fame, Keaton was famously private about her personal life. She never married but adopted two children — a daughter, Dexter, and a son, Duke — in the 1990s. She often spoke about how motherhood changed her life, saying in interviews that raising her children brought her the greatest sense of purpose.
Known for her eclectic fashion sense — particularly her love of men’s suits, wide-brimmed hats, and tailored blazers — Keaton became a style icon whose look was as influential as her acting. Her distinct voice, natural charisma, and refusal to conform made her one of Hollywood’s most admired figures.
A Legacy That Will Endure
Over her 50-year career, Diane Keaton worked with some of cinema’s greatest directors, from Francis Ford Coppola and Woody Allen to Nancy Meyers and Warren Beatty, and left behind a film legacy that continues to inspire new generations of actors and filmmakers.
Her passing marks the end of an era for Hollywood, but her influence — as an actress, comedian, fashion icon, and trailblazer — will remain indelible.
As Bette Midler poignantly said in her tribute, “What you saw was who she was.” Diane Keaton’s authenticity, both on and off screen, is what made her truly unforgettable.
