The 2025 Formula 1 season has officially concluded, and the European winter break is upon us. While most of the paddock is enjoying a well-deserved rest, Max Verstappen is already back on track, pushing the limits in a surprising test session in Portugal.
The Unexpected Arrival in Estoril
Speculation began immediately after reports surfaced that the four-time Red Bull champion’s private jet had landed in Portugal. Initial fan theories suggested a holiday trip, but it soon became clear that this was no vacation; it was an official test.
Verstappen was spotted at the Estoril circuit, where two cars belonging to the Verstappen.com Racing team were in action. The tests are part of the team’s early preparation for their planned GT3 program debut in 2026.

Mercedes Power and Red Bull Colours
The cars utilized for the testing were Mercedes-AMG GT3 models, bearing the race numbers 33 and 333. Strikingly, both cars were finished in the familiar Red Bull colours, a powerful visual juxtaposition given the manufacturer in question.
Verstappen wasn’t alone on the tarmac. He was joined by official Mercedes-AMG factory driver Jules Gounon, who also participated in the activities.
The presence of the Mercedes machinery and the focus of the tests in Portugal stem from a key strategic move: the Verstappen.com Racing team’s transition to Mercedes-AMG engines for the upcoming GT3 season. This step underscores an aggressive, early start to preparations for the new phase of their GT3 project.
Verstappen’s Enduring Interest Beyond F1
Verstappen’s active interest in racing categories outside of Formula 1 is well-documented. Just months prior, the World Champion impressed by competing on the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife with the Emil Frey Racing team. Alongside teammate Chris Lulham, he delivered a superior performance, standing out from the competition on the challenging German track.
Even during the F1 off-season, the competitive drive remains, proving that for Max Verstappen, there is no real brake in the pursuit of speed.
