TEHRAN / WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is dead, following a massive joint military operation by the United States and Israel. While Tehran has yet to officially confirm the passing of the 86-year-old ruler, the announcement marks a seismic shift in the volatile Middle Eastern landscape.
“Khamenei, one of the most evil people in History, is dead,” President Trump wrote in a characteristically blunt post on Truth Social. He described the event as “Justice for the people of Iran” and for “all Great Americans” who have suffered under the regime’s influence.

The “Decapitation” Strike
The operation, reportedly involving sophisticated tracking systems and high-precision munitions, targeted several high-ranking officials within the Islamic Republic. According to the President, the Supreme Leader was unable to evade the “Highly Sophisticated Tracking Systems” employed by the joint forces.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed these claims in a video statement, noting that “many signs” indicate the “tyrant” has been eliminated.
“This morning, we destroyed the compound of the tyrant Khamenei,” Netanyahu stated. “There are many signs that this tyrant is no longer. We eliminated senior officials in the ayatollahs’ regime, Revolutionary Guards commanders, and senior figures in the nuclear program.”

Conflicting Reports from Tehran
Despite the confident assertions from Washington and West Jerusalem, official word from Iran remains cautious. Earlier on February 28, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei insisted that Khamenei, alongside President Masud Pezeshkian, remained safe and “firmly in command.”
However, intelligence sources and satellite imagery suggest significant destruction at the Supreme Leader’s compound. If confirmed, the death of Khamenei—who has held nearly absolute power since 1989—would leave a massive power vacuum in a country already reeling from economic sanctions and internal unrest.
A Legacy of Crises
Khamenei’s rule was defined by a hard-line stance against the West and a series of domestic uprisings. Most recently, the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests of 2022-23 and mass demonstrations in early 2026 put the regime under unprecedented pressure.
President Trump suggested that the U.S. is already looking toward a future without the current clerical leadership. When asked if other members of the leadership were dead, Trump told NBC News, “A lot of it is. The people that make all the decisions, most of them are gone.”
As of Saturday night, the world waits for a definitive response from within the walls of the Kremlin-like security apparatus in Tehran.
