ASTARA BORDER CROSSING – As the military campaign led by U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intensifies, the Astara border crossing has become a vital artery for those fleeing the escalating violence in Iran.
Following a strategic decision by the Azerbaijani government on Saturday to open the gates for its citizens and foreign nationals, a wave of expatriates has been documented streaming across the frontier. Estimates suggest that between 370 and 400 people have successfully reached safety in Azerbaijan since the weekend. Among them are approximately 100 Azerbaijani citizens, while the remainder comprises expatriates from 19 different nations, including France, Italy, Poland, China, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal.
The atmosphere at the border is one of exhaustion mixed with profound relief. Families who have spent years building lives in Tehran now find themselves dragging suitcases across the asphalt, carrying only what they could gather in haste.
“We were living in Iran. We came here by road to the border region and crossed over,” said Rameeza, a young Pakistani woman who made the arduous journey from the capital with her parents and brother. Describing the transition from a war zone to the relative peace of Azerbaijan’s southernmost city, she noted, “The journey was okay… but back there, it was like an explosion.”
Her father, Sadullah Khan, spoke to reporters about the horrors witnessed under the heavy bombardment of the Israeli-American military campaign. “There is so much bombing in Tehran,” Khan said, visibly relieved to have his family out of harm’s way. “Two days ago, I left Tehran for Astara. Now I am safe; I am relieved.”
Unconfirmed reports suggest the scale of the evacuation may be even larger, with rumors circulating that nearly 500 Russian citizens have entered Azerbaijan under the new humanitarian initiative. Eyewitnesses described seeing large groups processed through security checkpoints throughout Monday.
As Tehran remains under siege, Baku’s decision to provide a safe corridor has turned the quiet border town of Astara into a global crossroads of refugees seeking sanctuary from a conflict that shows no signs of waning.
