MIAMI – In a night defined by raw emotion and a “Latin-flavored” roar that shook loanDepot Park, Venezuela defeated the United States 3–2 on Tuesday to claim its first-ever World Baseball Classic (WBC) championship.

The victory marks a monumental achievement for the South American nation, which emerged as the tournament’s dominant force by toppling baseball giants Japan and the U.S. in consecutive knockout rounds. For a country currently navigating deep political and economic turbulence, the triumph on the diamond provided a rare, unifying moment of national pride.

The Decisive Blow

The game reached a fever pitch in the eighth inning when American superstar Bryce Harper launched a dramatic, two-out, two-run home run into the center-field seats, erasing a 2–0 Venezuelan lead and sending the Miami crowd into a frenzy.

However, Venezuela’s resilience, a hallmark of their 2026 run, was on immediate display. In the top of the ninth, Luis Arraez drew a leadoff walk against U.S. reliever Garrett Whitlock. Pinch-runner Javier Sanoja then swiped second base, setting the stage for Eugenio Suárez. On a full-count changeup, Suárez laced an RBI double into the left-center gap, driving in Sanoja for the go-ahead run.

“Nobody believed in Venezuela, but now we win the championship today,” an elated Suárez said during the post-game celebrations. “This is a celebration for all of the Venezuelan country.”

Pitching Shuts Down ‘Dream Team’

While the U.S. roster was heralded as a “Dream Team” featuring the likes of Aaron Judge and Paul Skenes, their bats remained largely silent against a clinical Venezuelan pitching staff. Left-hander Eduardo Rodríguez set the tone early, carving through the American lineup for 4.1 scoreless innings and striking out Judge twice.

Daniel Palencia, pitching for the third time in four days, took the mound in the bottom of the ninth. He retired the Americans in order, sealing the title by striking out Roman Anthony with a 100-mph fastball.

National Celebration

The impact of the win resonated far beyond the stadium walls. In Caracas, thousands of fans flooded the Plaza de la Juventud, singing the national anthem amidst a chorus of honking horns. Recognizing the magnitude of the achievement, acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared Wednesday a “National Day of Joy,” making it a non-working holiday nationwide.

Maikel Garcia, the Kansas City Royals infielder who drove in Venezuela’s first run with a sacrifice fly, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

“The next time you guys do a ranking of baseball, Venezuela is No. 1,” Garcia said.

For the United States, the loss marks their second consecutive defeat in a WBC final, following their 2023 loss to Japan. Despite the disappointment, U.S. manager Mark DeRosa offered no excuses, tipping his hat to a Venezuelan side that he said “played with more heart.”
