United States President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met at the White House on Thursday for high-level discussions focused on trade, security cooperation, and strategic mineral development, despite continuing disagreements on several international issues.

According to reports from Agence France-Presse, Trump described Lula as a “dynamic” leader during the meeting, while the Brazilian president characterized the talks as “frank and positive.”

The discussions centered on strengthening bilateral economic ties between the United States and Brazil, including tariff-related matters and broader trade cooperation.

Both leaders also addressed growing regional security concerns, particularly organized crime, narcotics trafficking, and illegal arms smuggling across Latin America.

Lula said Brazil was prepared to support the creation of a regional and international task force to combat organized criminal networks operating across borders. He added that Trump had assured him that Washington would not interfere in Brazil’s upcoming presidential election.

Rare Earth Cooperation Emerges as Strategic Priority

A significant portion of the talks focused on cooperation involving rare earth minerals, an increasingly important strategic sector as global competition intensifies over advanced technologies and industrial supply chains.

Brazil possesses some of the world’s largest reserves of rare earth elements, which are critical for the production of semiconductors, electric vehicles, defense systems and renewable energy technologies.

The two countries reportedly explored opportunities for deeper cooperation in extraction, processing and supply chain development as Western governments seek alternatives to existing global dependencies in the sector.

Expanding Security Partnership

The White House meeting also built on a recent bilateral security agreement signed in April between Brazil and the United States.

The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation against drug and weapons trafficking by expanding intelligence sharing and enhancing cargo container inspection systems between the two countries.

Officials from both governments said the partnership is designed to improve maritime security, disrupt criminal supply routes, and enhance customs monitoring capabilities.

Diplomatic Differences Remain

Although the meeting was described as constructive, differences remain between Washington and Brasília on several international matters, including aspects of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and broader geopolitical alignments.

Still, both governments signaled interest in maintaining pragmatic cooperation in trade, technology and regional security despite those disagreements.

Analysts view the meeting as part of a wider effort by both countries to preserve strategic economic relations amid rising global competition over energy, minerals and supply chains.
