International humanitarian organizations have launched emergency response operations following the pair of powerful earthquakes that devastated north central Venezuela on Wednesday evening, leaving more than 160 people dead and nearly 1,000 injured, according to the latest official figures.

Rescue teams continued searching through collapsed buildings on Thursday as emergency crews raced against time to locate survivors believed to be trapped beneath the rubble. Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez said intensive search and rescue operations remain underway in the worst-affected areas.

The international response has expanded rapidly, with governments and humanitarian organizations coordinating relief efforts aimed at providing immediate assistance to survivors. United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Washington has dispatched urban search and rescue teams after speaking with Rodríguez.

Global Empowerment Mission deploys emergency teams

Florida-based humanitarian organization Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) announced that it is partnering with a Venezuelan relief organization to begin emergency operations.

The nonprofit said its reconnaissance and emergency response teams are expected to arrive in Venezuela on Friday, where they will assess damage, coordinate with local partners, and begin delivering humanitarian assistance to affected communities.

Red Cross expands medical response

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said the Venezuelan Red Cross has activated its nationwide emergency network, with hospitals and polyclinics continuing to provide medical care despite widespread damage.

Search and rescue teams are supporting evacuation efforts, while four rapid assessment teams have been deployed to the hardest hit regions.

According to the IFRC, the most urgent humanitarian needs include search and rescue operations, emergency shelter for displaced families, trauma care, psychosocial support, clean drinking water, sanitation services, and essential household supplies.

The Venezuelan Red Cross also reported that its own headquarters sustained damage during the earthquakes while confirming that efforts are underway to account for the safety of all staff members and volunteers.

Children among the most vulnerable

Save the Children said its teams and local partners are urgently assessing humanitarian needs, with particular attention focused on children and families displaced by the disaster.

The organization warned that although the full scale of destruction is still being evaluated, previous disasters suggest that children will require immediate access to food, clean water, temporary shelter, healthcare, and psychological support.

United Nations activates emergency response

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has begun deploying specialized Urban Search and Rescue teams through the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).

UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher said international solidarity is growing as rescue operations continue.

Several UN agencies, including the World Food Programme, UNICEF, the International Organization for Migration, the UN Refugee Agency and the Office for Project Services, have confirmed they are prepared to support relief operations, with some already mobilizing personnel and supplies.

World Vision prepares humanitarian assistance

World Vision also announced it is assessing conditions on the ground while preparing its emergency response.

The organization shared accounts from staff members who experienced the earthquakes firsthand. Luis Colmenarez, World Vision’s regional emergency communications specialist based in Barquisimeto, described scenes of panic after the tremors struck while he was inside a movie theater.

According to Colmenarez, people rushed toward emergency exits as children cried, some prayed, and others stumbled in the darkness. He said the shaking appeared to last between two and three minutes, though it felt much longer amid the widespread panic.

How can people help

Humanitarian organizations are encouraging individuals wishing to support relief efforts to contribute through their official donation platforms.

Donations are expected to help finance emergency medical care, food distribution, temporary shelters, clean water supplies, sanitation services, and long-term recovery efforts for communities devastated by the earthquakes.

As rescue operations continue across affected areas, aid agencies warn that humanitarian needs are likely to increase significantly in the coming days as damage assessments become more complete.
