England survived one of the most dramatic matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday night, defeating co-hosts Mexico 3,2 in an unforgettable Round of 16 clash at the legendary Estadio Azteca to book a quarter-final showdown with Norway.

After a one hour delay caused by a violent thunderstorm over Mexico City, supporters witnessed a match that had everything: spectacular goals, two penalties, a red card, relentless attacking football and a heroic defensive effort from Thomas Tuchel’s side, which played with ten men for almost forty minutes.

For Mexico, the defeat marked the end of an inspiring World Cup campaign that captivated home supporters until the very final whistle.

Storm Delays Kick-off Before Azteca Delivers Another Classic

The famous Azteca Stadium, one of football’s most historic venues, once again lived up to its legendary reputation.

Heavy storms forced organizers to postpone kick-off by an hour, but once play finally began, the match quickly evolved into one of the tournament’s greatest spectacles.

Mexico started aggressively, feeding off the energy of more than 80,000 passionate supporters.

Raúl Jiménez forced Jordan Pickford into an early save, while Javier Aguirre’s side controlled much of the opening half hour, preventing England from creating meaningful chances.

England Strike with Ruthless Efficiency

Despite Mexico’s bright start, England suddenly transformed the match.

Bukayo Saka burst down the right wing before delivering a pinpoint cross that Jude Bellingham powered home with a commanding header in the 36th minute, giving England a 1,0 lead and handing Mexico their first goal conceded of the tournament.

Just two minutes later, England struck again.

Harry Kane launched a rapid counterattack before finding Bellingham, who calmly finished to double England’s advantage after only his fourth touch of the match.

Mexico, however, refused to collapse.

Just before half-time, Julián Quiñones capitalized on a defensive mistake inside the area to fire past Pickford, reducing the deficit to 2,1 and reigniting the Azteca crowd.

Red Card Changes Everything

The second half produced even greater drama.

Only nine minutes after the restart, defender Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a dangerous tackle, leaving England to play with ten men.

Before Mexico could fully exploit the numerical advantage, England earned a penalty after Anthony Gordon was brought down inside the box.

Harry Kane converted confidently to restore a two-goal cushion at 3,1.

Mexico immediately responded.

Raúl Jiménez converted a penalty of his own shortly afterwards, making it 3,2 and setting up a thrilling finale.

Tuchel Builds the Wall

With nearly forty minutes remaining, Thomas Tuchel abandoned attacking ambitions and focused entirely on protecting England’s lead.

Additional defenders, including towering centre back Dan Burn, were introduced as England formed an almost impenetrable defensive wall in front of Pickford.

Mexico dominated possession throughout the closing stages, repeatedly delivering crosses into the penalty area, but struggled to find the creativity needed to break England’s disciplined defensive structure.

The match stretched well beyond ten minutes of added time as England’s players threw themselves into tackles, blocks and clearances.

When the final whistle finally arrived, exhausted English players collapsed to the turf in relief after surviving one of the fiercest tests of the tournament.

Mexico Exit with Pride

Although eliminated, Mexico left the World Cup with its reputation enhanced.

Their fearless performances, passionate home support, and refusal to surrender until the final seconds made them one of the tournament’s standout teams.

Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was visibly emotional after the match, symbolizing the disappointment felt by an entire nation whose dream ended on home soil.

Norway Await

England now advances to the quarter-finals, where they will face Norway, who earlier eliminated Brazil thanks to a superb performance led by Erling Haaland.

If Sunday’s dramatic encounter at the Azteca is any indication, England will enter the next round battle-tested, resilient, and believing they can challenge for the World Cup trophy.
