Umeå, Sweden – Elfyn Evans secured a thrilling victory at Rally Sweden 2025, marking his 10th career triumph in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) and taking the overall lead in the drivers’ standings. The Welsh driver from Toyota GAZOO Racing outpaced teammate Takamoto Katsuta by just 3.8 seconds after an intense four-day battle over Sweden’s icy and snow-covered stages.

A Weekend of Tactical Mastery

Evans and co-driver Scott Martin managed their pace meticulously, balancing aggression with strategy. Entering the final day, Evans held a marginal 3.0-second advantage, but the morning’s first stage, Västervik 1, saw Katsuta snatch the lead, setting a blistering pace that put him 7.5 seconds ahead. However, Evans counterattacked in the afternoon loop, reclaiming his advantage in the second pass through Västervik before delivering a dominant performance in the Power Stage, securing maximum points and sealing his victory.

I made life difficult for myself in the first stage today, but that helped me focus,” Evans reflected post-race. “I knew we had to be perfect in the final stages, and thankfully, we delivered. It’s an incredible feeling to take this win and the championship lead.

Neuville Secures Podium, Tänak’s Late Charge Falls Short

Hyundai Motorsport’s Thierry Neuville, the defending WRC champion, clinched third place but struggled to match the Toyotas’ pace. His 11.9-second gap to Evans reflected a solid yet unspectacular weekend for the Belgian, who now faces a tough title defense.

Meanwhile, his teammate Ott Tänak, a two-time WRC champion, rebounded from mechanical troubles on Saturday, posting impressive times on the final day. Though he closed in on Neuville, the Estonian ultimately fell short by just 4.9 seconds, settling for fourth place.

Toyota’s Kalle Rovanperä, the 2022 and 2023 world champion, had a frustrating rally, never quite finding his rhythm. The Finnish star finished fifth, 16.0 seconds behind Tänak, in what he described as “one of my most challenging weekends in Sweden.”

Midfield Battles and M-Sport Ford’s Resurgence

M-Sport Ford enjoyed a strong performance, with Martinš Sesks securing sixth place and leading the charge for the British squad. The young Latvian driver finished ahead of Toyota’s Sami Pajari, who placed seventh after a steady and measured drive.

A dramatic moment unfolded early on Sunday as Josh McErlean, also in an M-Sport Ford Puma Rally1, got stuck in a snowbank, dropping down the order after running eighth. His misfortune allowed teammate Grégoire Munster to move up to eighth place, while Oliver Solberg and Roope Korhonen, the top WRC2 finishers, completed the overall top 10.

Championship Standings and the Road Ahead

With his Swedish triumph and a runner-up finish in Monte Carlo, Evans now leads the WRC championship with 28 points in hand after two of the 14 rounds.

Drivers’ Standings after Rally Sweden 2025:

1️⃣ Elfyn Evans (Toyota) – 55 points
2️⃣ Takamoto Katsuta (Toyota) – 47 points
3️⃣ Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) – 39 points
4️⃣ Ott Tänak (Hyundai) – 35 points
5️⃣ Kalle Rovanperä (Toyota) – 30 points

The WRC now heads to Safari Rally Kenya (March 20–23), a legendary event renowned for its grueling conditions, unpredictable weather, and rugged terrain. With Toyota’s dominance in Sweden and Evans riding high on confidence, all eyes will be on whether Hyundai can strike back in Africa.
