Kyiv, Ukraine – May 9, 2025In a groundbreaking development, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced it has dismantled what it describes as a suspected Hungarian military intelligence network operating within Ukrainian territory. This marks the first officially recorded case of espionage by an EU member state targeting Ukraine’s national defense.

According to a statement released by the SBU on Friday, Ukrainian counterintelligence successfully identified and neutralized a group of individuals believed to be collecting classified military data for Hungary. The agency stated that the operatives were gathering intelligence on the Ukrainian military’s defense systems, including anti-aircraft positions, weapons availability on the black market, and internal troop movements.

“This is the first case in the modern history of the country when espionage activities of a foreign intelligence service from an EU country to the detriment of Ukrainian security have been officially recorded,” the SBU said via Telegram.

Among those detained is a 40-year-old former serviceman from the Beregivskyy district in Zakarpattia, a western Ukrainian region bordering Hungary. The man, recruited in 2021, allegedly worked under the direction of a Hungarian military intelligence officer whose identity has been confirmed by Ukrainian authorities.

The SBU revealed that in September 2024, the agent began executing orders from his handler. He reportedly crossed into Hungary under the pretext of accompanying his ailing father for medical treatment. During a covert meeting, the agent received encrypted communication equipment and financial compensation. He then continued to transmit sensitive data, including the locations and operations of Ukrainian security forces.

A second suspect, a former servicewoman of Ukraine’s defense forces, was also arrested. The SBU claims she provided intelligence on her former unit’s aircraft fleet and defense infrastructure to foreign operatives.

Both individuals were apprehended at their residences, where authorities seized mobile phones and other incriminating materials. A video released by the SBU on YouTube shows the suspects being questioned, with the accused reportedly speaking Hungarian from the third minute onward.

The exposure of this alleged spy ring is expected to strain diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Hungary, which have already been tense over various geopolitical and minority rights issues. No official response from the Hungarian government has been issued at the time of publication.

Ukrainian officials emphasize that the investigation is ongoing and that further arrests or revelations may follow.
