Russian forces have stepped up their advance in eastern Ukraine, pressing toward the strategically important Dobropillia–Kramatorsk highway in the Donetsk region, amid warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Moscow is redeploying troops in preparation for a new offensive.

According to Ukraine’s open-source intelligence project DeepState, Russian troops have likely captured nearby settlements to support further operations, bringing the contested “grey zone” directly to the highway, which had been a vital route for both civilian and military traffic until just weeks ago.

Dobropillia sits about 94 kilometers northwest of Russian-occupied Donetsk and 22 kilometers north of the embattled city of Pokrovsk. The area has been a focal point for Russian advances since spring, with the offensive accelerating in August. Analysts warn that the push threatens key Ukrainian logistics routes, potentially placing them within range of Russian reconnaissance and attack drones.

The US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted that while it may be too soon to declare an operational breakthrough, Russian forces are “very likely” aiming to turn these tactical gains into a significant strategic advantage. The think tank drew parallels with Moscow’s April 2024 offensive northwest of Avdiivka, where similar tactics led to the capture of critical territory.

In response, Ukraine’s 1st Azov Corps of the National Guard has moved into defensive positions in the Pokrovsk sector to halt Russian advances. The unit described the situation as “complex and dynamic,” with ongoing clashes and reports of Russian losses in both personnel and equipment.

Zelenskyy, in his latest address, dismissed any notion that Moscow is preparing for peace, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of using upcoming diplomatic engagements, particularly Friday’s summit in Alaska with US President Donald Trump, as political theater.

“Putin is determined only to present a meeting with America as his victory and then continue acting exactly as before, applying the same pressure on Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said. He stressed that Ukrainian intelligence reports indicate Russia is shifting forces in ways consistent with preparations for renewed large-scale offensives.

ISW analysts warned that the coming days could be decisive in the Pokrovsk area, as Ukrainian forces work to prevent a rapid Russian advance north and northwest of the city.
