Tel Aviv, August 21, 2025 — An international team of researchers has uncovered the earliest known evidence of interbreeding between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals. The discovery centers on the fossil of a five-year-old child found in Israel’s Skhul Cave on Mount Carmel, a site first excavated nearly a century ago.

The skeleton, dated to about 140,000 years ago, shows a striking blend of anatomical features from both human groups. According to the study, published in L’Anthropologie, the skull vault displays a curvature typical of Homo sapiens, while the blood supply system to the brain, the lower jaw, and the inner ear structure resemble those of Neanderthals.

“This fossil is the earliest known physical evidence of mating between Neanderthals and Homo sapiens,” says Prof. Israel Hershkovitz of Tel Aviv University, who co-led the study with Dr. Anne Dambricourt-Malassé of the French National Centre for Scientific Research. “It shows that the genetic exchange between these two groups began far earlier than previously believed, long before the encounters documented in Europe between 60,000 and 40,000 years ago.”

In 2021, Prof. Hershkovitz’s team described fossils from Nesher Ramla in central Israel, indicating that early Neanderthals lived in the region as far back as 400,000 years ago.

Homo sapiens, meanwhile, began leaving Africa about 200,000 years ago. The Levant became a crucial crossroads where the two populations met, exchanged genes, and, as the Skhul child shows, forged deep biological and social ties.

Advanced Technologies, Ancient Clues

To analyze the fossil, researchers employed micro-CT scanning at the Shmunis Family Anthropology Institute at Tel Aviv University. The scans enabled high-resolution three-dimensional reconstructions of the child’s skull and jaw, including hidden structures such as the inner ear and the vascular channels of the brain. These features were compared against a wide range of Neanderthal and early Homo sapiens fossils.

The analysis revealed that the Skhul child was not a member of a “pure” Homo sapiens group. Instead, the child bore clear signs of genetic blending, the result of sustained interaction between local Neanderthals and newly arrived Homo sapiens populations.

Rewriting the Human Story

Until now, the oldest known fossil showing mixed traits was the “Lapedo Valley Child” discovered in Portugal in 1998, dated to about 28,000 years ago. The Skhul child predates it by over 100,000 years, dramatically expanding the timeline of human–Neanderthal relations.

“These findings confirm that the process of interbreeding was not confined to Europe or a late stage of human evolution,” Prof. Hershkovitz explains. “The Levant was the first place where these groups encountered each other and began shaping the shared human story we carry in our DNA today.”

Modern genetic studies indicate that between 2 and 6 percent of the DNA of living people outside Africa originates from Neanderthals. The Skhul discovery demonstrates that this exchange was rooted in much earlier and deeper interactions than scholars had previously recognized.

As the research team concludes, the Skhul child is more than an archaeological curiosity. It is a tangible link to the first known moment when two human lineages, once considered separate species, came together to form a shared legacy that continues to shape humanity.
