YORK COUNTY, Pa. – Three police officers were killed and two others critically wounded Wednesday in a shooting that erupted as they were following up on a domestic-related investigation in rural York County, Pennsylvania. The suspected attacker was also killed in the violent encounter, authorities said.
The shooting, one of the deadliest for law enforcement in the state this century, unfolded in North Codorus Township, an area about 115 miles west of Philadelphia, not far from the Maryland border. The incident began on Tuesday and continued into an escalated response on Wednesday, though precise details of the confrontation have not yet been released.
Dirk Anderson, who lives across the street from where the shooting occurred, reported hearing “quite a few” gunshots. He later saw a heavy police and emergency response, including a helicopter. The scene was described as a quiet rural road lined by a barn, a goat farm, and soybean and corn fields, now cordoned off by some 30 police vehicles.

Hours after the shooting, a solemn procession of police and emergency vehicles escorted the fallen officers to the coroner’s office, as community members gathered holding American flags in a show of respect and support.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro condemned the violence during a news conference, calling the loss of life “tragic.” State Attorney General Pamela Bondi described violence against police as “a scourge on our society.”
The two wounded officers were transported to York Hospital, where they were listed in critical but stable condition.
Authorities have not released the names of the officers killed, the departments they served, or the identity of the shooter, citing the ongoing investigation that is expected to span multiple locations in York County.
The incident marks the second time this year that an officer has been killed in the area. Last February, a man armed with a pistol and zip ties entered a hospital intensive care unit, took staff hostage, and died in a shootout that also killed a police officer.
In 2009, three Pittsburgh police officers were ambushed and shot dead while responding to a domestic disturbance.
Police departments across the region expressed grief and solidarity on social media, while residents laid flowers outside the Northern York County Regional Police Department headquarters—a small but powerful tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
