TAMPA, Fla. – U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday a significant degradation of ISIS capabilities in Syria following a high-tempo month of joint military operations. Between October 1 and November 6, U.S. forces, alongside Syrian partner groups, executed more than 22 targeted missions designed to dismantle the terrorist organization’s local infrastructure and global reach.
The operations, conducted under the banner of Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), resulted in the deaths of five ISIS operatives and the capture of 19 others. Military officials stated that these strikes have effectively diminished the group’s ability to export violence and plan attacks outside of the region.
A Strategic Victory. “Our success in countering the ISIS threat in Syria is a notable achievement,” said Admiral Brad Cooper, Commander of CENTCOM. “We will continue to aggressively pursue ISIS remnants to ensure the gains made are lasting and that the group is not able to regenerate.”
The surge in military activity comes as the political landscape in Damascus undergoes a historic transformation. Earlier this week, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa officially announced that Syria has joined the Global Coalition Against ISIS, becoming its 90th member state. This move signals a new era of cooperation between the U.S.-led coalition and the Syrian administration in the post-Assad era.
The Battle Against Radicalization Beyond kinetic military strikes, Admiral Cooper emphasized that the long-term defeat of ISIS depends on addressing the humanitarian crisis in northeast Syria. A primary focus of the coalition is the repatriation of displaced persons from camps such as al-Hol and al-Roj.
At their peak in 2019, these camps held 70,000 individuals. Through aggressive repatriation efforts, that number has been reduced to fewer than 30,000.
“Repatriating vulnerable populations before they are radicalized is not just compassion, it is a decisive blow against ISIS’s ability to ever regenerate,” Cooper stated during a recent UN conference. He urged international partners to expedite the return of their citizens for judicial handling or reintegration, citing the camps as potential breeding grounds for extremist ideologies.
A Unified Front With Syria now formally part of the 90-nation coalition, CENTCOM officials expressed optimism that the increased coordination will lead to greater stability across the war-torn nation. The coalition’s mission has evolved from active territorial combat to a strategy of stabilization, redevelopment, and the permanent denial of safe havens for ISIS sleeper cells.
