Portugal has etched its name in football history by winning its first-ever U-17 World Cup, defeating Austria 1-0 in a thrilling final. The victory marks a significant achievement for Portuguese football, with the team securing the nation’s third World Cup title, joining the U-20 World Cup wins in 1989 and 1991.

The Road to the Final

Portugal’s victory in the 2025 U-17 World Cup places the country among the world’s footballing elite, claiming its third global title after previous successes in 1989 and 1991. This achievement comes 34 years after Portugal’s last World Cup victory, ushering in a new era for youth football in the country.

The team entered the final in Doha with the determination to make history, and from the very first moments of the match, Portugal showed its dominance. Austria, known for its aggressive and fast-paced play, struggled to break down Portugal’s solid defense, which expertly handled their counterattacks.

Portugal’s Tactics and Anísio Cabral’s Winning Goal

The first half saw Portugal controlling the game with clear intent. Early in the match, Anísio Cabral and Mateus Mide created a dangerous chance, but Duarte Cunha’s shot went wide (3′). Austria attempted to respond, but it was Portugal who looked more threatening. At the 13-minute mark, Duarte Cunha put the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed after a collision with Austrian goalkeeper Daniel Posch.

Despite the initial pressure, Portugal remained composed and was rewarded in the 32nd minute when Anísio Cabral scored the only goal of the match. The goal came from a well-worked move involving Mauro Furtado, Duarte Cunha, and Mateus Mide, with Mide providing the assist for Cabral to score into an empty net. The referee initially reviewed the play for a possible offside but ultimately decided to confirm the goal, much to the relief of the Portuguese squad.

Second Half and Determined Defense

In the second half, Austria knew they had to change their approach and began playing more patiently, creating a slight possession advantage. However, they struggled to break down Portugal’s well-organized defense. The only real threat came from Hasan Deshishku’s free-kick in the 48th minute, which was comfortably saved by Portugal’s goalkeeper, Romário Cunha.

Portugal, however, did not sit back. Stevan Manuel had a powerful shot that forced an Austrian defender to fall (49′), and Mateus Mide came close to doubling Portugal’s lead with a header off a perfect cross from Anísio Cabral (62′). While Austria tried to apply pressure, it failed to find any solutions in the attack.

In the final minutes, Austria nearly equalized when Daniel Frauscher, just after coming on, hit the post in the 85th minute. The Portuguese defense was under intense pressure, but they held firm and secured the victory, despite some tense moments. The final whistle blew, and Portugal celebrated their first-ever U-17 World Cup title.

A Victory for a Special Generation

This victory cements Portugal’s place as a rising power in world football, with the U-17 team’s remarkable achievement adding to the country’s already impressive footballing pedigree. Under the guidance of coach Luís Freire, the players – particularly Anísio Cabral, Mateus Mide, and Romário Cunha – have earned a special place in Portuguese football history.

This title puts Portugal in a strong position within global youth football, and the future looks bright for the next generation of players. With this win, the U-17 team joins the ranks of previous champions, and Portugal now focuses on the remaining two major titles that have eluded the nation: the U-21 European Championship and the World Cup with the senior team.

Coach Roberto Martínez, who leads the senior team, and Luís Freire, who guides the U-21 team, now carry the responsibility of building on the success of this golden generation. With Portugal poised to continue its ascent, the country’s footballing future looks promising, and the victory in the U-17 World Cup marks just the beginning of what could be an even brighter future ahead.
