Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began with fantasies of blitzkrieg triumph. Three years later, those fantasies are dead, the battlefield is stagnant, and the Kremlin is bleeding men and money at a rate not seen since World War II.

Yet, shockingly, U.S. intelligence assessments reported by the Wall Street Journal reveal a truth far darker than strategic failure.

Vladimir Putin no longer fears the war.
He fears the moment it ends.

What began as an imperial gamble has become a political trap. In Moscow, the real catastrophe is no longer measured in tanks destroyed or cities lost, but in something far more existential: accountability.

A War Sustained by Fear, Not Strategy

According to economist Anders Åslund, Russia stopped fighting to win long ago. Victory is no longer the objective. Survival is. The Kremlin now clings to the war like a life raft, terrified of what awaits on the shore.

A prolonged conflict, however brutal, can be justified with propaganda and patriotism.
Peace cannot.

Ending the war would force the Kremlin to confront questions it cannot evade. The treasury is drained. The economy is cracking. Casualties have reached horrifying levels. And Moscow has nothing,  nothing to show for its sacrifice.

Millions of Veterans, Millions of Questions

More than two million Russians have gone to fight. Many are young conscripts. Many are convicts. All were promised dignity, purpose, redemption, or reward. One day, they will return. And they will look their government in the eye and ask the question Putin most fears:

“Why?”

Why did my son die?
Why did I lose my leg?
Why did we burn our future for a war that delivered nothing?

The Kremlin has no answer. No glorious victory. No new empire. No triumphant narrative capable of absorbing the grief, anger, and betrayal that will pour out the moment the truth is unavoidable.

Failed Objectives, Exposed on the World Stage

Historian Mark Galeotti says Putin is now trapped in a tightening vise of fear and geopolitical humiliation. Even Donald Trump’s proposed peace initiatives highlight Russia’s disastrous failures.

Every original war aim lies shattered.

“Denazification” turned out to be a hollow slogan.
“Demilitarization” has produced the opposite effect; Ukraine now boasts one of the most battle-hardened armies in Europe.
Stopping NATO expansion resulted in Ukraine moving closer than ever to joining the alliance.

Even territory gained under occupation offers no shield from the reality that Russia’s strategic ambitions have collapsed. No map redraw can hide the truth.

The Oldest Rule in Geopolitics — Broken with Catastrophic Consequences

Putin broke the cardinal rule every leader must respect:
Never start a war you cannot win.

He believed Ukraine would crumble.
He believed the West would fracture.
He believed his army was unstoppable.

He was wrong on every count.

Now the Kremlin is locked in a war that cannot deliver victory and a peace that could trigger political upheaval. For Putin, the battlefield is no longer the greatest danger. The danger is what happens when the guns go quiet.

A Regime Protected by War, Threatened by Peace

This is the paradox that haunts Moscow.

The war is destroying Russia slowly.
Peace could destroy it instantly.

Putin is not prolonging the war because he is confident. He is prolonging it because he is terrified. As long as soldiers fight, as long as casualties are hidden behind patriotic slogans, as long as the conflict drags on, the Kremlin can postpone the reckoning.

But the moment peace comes, the illusion shatters.

The truth will arrive with the returning soldiers, and with them, a question the Kremlin is desperately trying to outrun.
