LUXEMBOURG CITY – Luxembourg has solidified its position as a growing center for European defense manufacturing with the launch of the new headquarters and production facility for North Defence S.a.r.l. on October 16. The company, formerly known as North Fire, is strategically expanding its European footprint to meet the escalating demand for military and emergency vehicles.
The high-profile launch event was attended by Luxembourg’s Directorate of Defence, led by Defence Minister, Her Excellency Yuriko Backes.
Strategic Move to the Heart of Europe
The company’s rebranding to North Defence reflects its focus on the converging requirements of military and civilian emergency vehicle design, a trend made clear during its support efforts for Ukraine. The company presented its first batch of Ukraine-bound light mobility vehicles and three of six air crash trucks destined for the country, highlighting Luxembourg’s unwavering support for Kyiv.
North Defence CEO Oliver North (a former British Royal Engineer) explained the strategic decision to relocate the headquarters from the UK to Luxembourg, despite his passion for British manufacturing. He cited the need to be “headquartered in the heart of Europe to ensure we can design, build, and deploy our industry-leading vehicles most expediently.”

Economic and Security Benefits
Defence Minister Backes emphasized the dual benefits of North Defence’s arrival, noting the positive economic benefit to Luxembourg taxpayers by upscaling the national defense industrial sector. This expansion helps the Grand Duchy achieve essential new defense spending targets domestically, driving higher employment and boosting local supply chains .
The new facility will immediately commence production of non-armoured light mobility vehicles as part of its ‘phase one switch on,’ with administrative and production teams being recruited en masse. North Defence confirmed that retired Major Mark Gresty has been appointed as General Manager of the new plant, having served alongside Oliver North in the British Army.
While the new Luxembourg base focuses on defense, the original manufacturing plant in Yorkshire, UK, will remain the Centre of Excellence for the firefighting division, which is expected to benefit from technology developed through the expanded military and defense programmes.
This development underscores the increasing complexity of European defence requirements in the face of geopolitical instability.
