KYIV, Ukraine – Ukrainian Special Operations Forces (SOF), operating in a coordinated effort with the domestic insurgent network “Black Spark,” have executed a daring and successful maritime strike deep behind conventional front lines, hitting two Russian military cargo vessels in the Caspian Sea. The operation targeted a vital logistical pipeline, demonstrating Ukraine’s expanding reach and intelligence capability against Moscow’s war machine.

The mission took place near the shores of the Republic of Kalmykia, a strategic region where Russia has concentrated logistical routes linking its military supply chain with external partners, particularly involving transfers of weapons and military equipment.

The success of the operation hinged on precise, actionable intelligence supplied by members of the Black Spark network. According to the Special Operations Forces Command, the insurgents provided detailed information on the vessels’ movements, cargo types, and logistical patterns, allowing Ukrainian forces to plan and execute the strike with high accuracy.

The two ships confirmed as destroyed or severely damaged are the Kompozitor Rakhmaninov and the Askar-Sarydzha. Both vessels have long been suspected of facilitating illicit transfers of weapons and military technology, including shipments allegedly linked to Iran. The vessels were previously placed under U.S. sanctions for their role in sustaining Russia’s war effort through covert maritime arms deliveries.

By striking these vessels, Ukraine has hit a critical node in Russia’s broader supply network, one that extends far beyond the conventional war zone and relies on maritime routes to circumvent international oversight. Disrupting these channels undercuts Moscow’s ability to replenish heavy equipment and sustain offensive operations across the front.

Ukrainian Special Operations Forces emphasized that these actions are part of a systematic effort to weaken Russian offensive capabilities in regions where the Kremlin maintains strategic depth and does not expect resistance.

The operation in the Caspian Sea comes shortly after Defense Intelligence operatives from the elite special unit “Prymary” carried out a separate, precise strike on Russian assets in temporarily occupied Crimea on December 10-11, 2025. Together, these missions underscore Ukraine’s growing capacity for long-range, asymmetric strikes against key military infrastructure, regardless of its distance from the active battlefield.
