ODESA, Ukraine – Russian forces launched a missile strike against the port infrastructure in Odesa, with initial reports indicating that a Turkish-operated passenger and cargo ferry was struck. The attack, reportedly carried out using an Iskander operational-tactical missile system, underscores Russia’s systematic campaign to disrupt Ukraine’s vital maritime connections on the Black Sea.

The strike reportedly hit the CENK T, a passenger-cargo ferry operated by the Turkish company Cenk Ro-Ro. The vessel is actively used on regular routes between Turkey and Ukraine, transporting essential cargo and passengers. The ferry was reportedly struck while situated within the port area, a critical hub for both commercial and humanitarian shipments.

The use of the Iskander missile system, a short-range ballistic missile platform known for its precision targeting capabilities, suggests that the port infrastructure itself, or assets within it, were deemed high-value targets by Russian command. The Iskander system, which can carry various warheads, has been widely deployed by Russia throughout the conflict to strike infrastructure and transportation nodes.

Ukrainian officials have consistently stated that Russia continues to target port infrastructure in southern Ukraine. This campaign aims to cripple logistics, choke off export revenues, and isolate Ukraine from international maritime trade.

The port of Odesa remains one of Ukraine’s most strategically critical maritime hubs. Targeting a vessel like the CENK T, which services an active international route, carries a significant message about Russia’s willingness to impede commercial traffic, potentially impacting regional security and the flow of goods across the Black Sea.
