MOSCOW — The Kremlin confirmed on Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin will send official New Year and Christmas greetings to U.S. President Donald Trump, a move described by Moscow as a gesture of “diplomatic politeness” amid a flurry of high-stakes peace negotiations in Florida.

The announcement was made by presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, who told reporters, “As polite people, we will send Mr. Trump our congratulations.” The confirmation followed a period of uncharacteristic hesitation from the Kremlin, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov having stated only hours earlier that an announcement would come “later.”

The seasonal greetings come against the backdrop of intensive, ongoing negotiations in Miami, Florida.  Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev arrived in the U.S. this weekend for consultations with Trump’s inner circle, including special envoy Steve Witkoff and unofficial adviser Jared Kushner.

Dmitriev characterized the discussions as “proceeding constructively” and noted that they would continue through the weekend. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that diplomatic efforts are moving “quickly,” the Kremlin has remained cautious, emphasizing that all parties must adhere to the “spirit and letter” of previous understandings.

A key point of reference for the current Florida talks is the August 2025 Alaska Summit. Held at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, that meeting marked the first face-to-face encounter between Trump and Putin since Trump’s reelection.

While the Alaska summit ended without a formal ceasefire, it established several “red lines” and frameworks:

  • The “Alaska Spirit”: A commitment to personal diplomacy over traditional bureaucratic channels.

  • Strategic Compromise: Discussions centered on U.S. security guarantees for Kyiv in exchange for potential territorial concessions, a proposal that remains a significant sticking point for the Ukrainian government.

  • Direct Channels: The establishment of the Witkoff-Dmitriev pipeline, which bypasses many traditional State Department and Russian Foreign Ministry hurdles.

Regional and Global Implications

The shift toward a Florida-based negotiation hub has drawn mixed reactions from European allies. French President Emmanuel Macron recently expressed interest in re-engaging with Putin to ensure that European interests are not sidelined by a bilateral U.S.-Russia deal.

Diplomatic Event Date Key Outcome
Alaska Summit Aug 15, 2025 First Trump-Putin meeting; set framework for “constructive” talks.
Berlin Meetings Dec 15, 2025 U.S. envoys briefed European and Ukrainian leaders on plan revisions.

Despite the “constructive” tone in Miami, the situation on the ground remains volatile.16 NWS meteorologists and regional observers note that while diplomacy takes place in the sun of Florida, the winter frontline in Ukraine continues to see heavy engagement, with both sides seeking to improve their leverage before a potential January 2026 breakthrough.
