Manchester United have dismissed head coach Ruben Amorim after just 14 months in charge, the club confirmed on Monday, bringing an abrupt end to a turbulent spell marked by inconsistent results and mounting internal tension.

The decision followed Sunday’s 1–1 draw against Leeds United, a match after which Amorim’s pointed public comments are understood to have played a decisive role in the club’s move. Multiple sources close to Old Trafford indicated that the leadership had become increasingly concerned about both the team’s on-pitch performances and its overall direction.

In an official statement, Manchester United said the decision was taken reluctantly but deemed necessary given the club’s current position in the Premier League.

“Ruben Amorim has left his role as head coach of Manchester United. With the club currently in sixth place in the Premier League, the leadership has decided that now is the right moment to make a change. This decision is intended to give the team the best possible chance of finishing the season as strongly as possible,” the statement read.

The club thanked the Portuguese coach for his contribution and wished him well in his future career.

Darren Fletcher, currently part of United’s coaching and technical structure, has been appointed interim head coach with immediate effect. No timeframe has been given for the appointment of a permanent successor.

Amorim departs after overseeing 63 matches in all competitions, winning just 24 of them. While his appointment had initially been greeted with optimism, results failed to match expectations, and United struggled for consistency in both domestic and European competitions.

The dismissal was first reported by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, who confirmed the decision on social media shortly before the club’s official announcement.

United now enters a crucial phase of the season amid renewed uncertainty, with Fletcher tasked with stabilising the squad and salvaging a campaign that has once again fallen short of the club’s ambitions.
