WASHINGTON D.C. — US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Ottawa, threatening to impose a sweeping 100% tariff on all Canadian imports if the country proceeds with a strategic trade agreement with China. The statement, released via Truth Social on Saturday, marks a significant escalation in trade tensions within North America.
Trump specifically targeted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, accusing him of attempting to turn Canada into a “drop-off port” for Chinese goods intended for the United States. “If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a conduit for China to send products into the US, he is sorely mistaken,” Trump stated, adding that China would “eat Canada alive” if given the opportunity.

The friction follows Prime Minister Carney’s recent diplomatic efforts in Beijing, which resulted in a trade deal worth over $7 billion, aimed at unlocking markets for Canadian agricultural exports and securing quotas for Chinese electric vehicles. Carney defended the move as an exercise of national sovereignty, stating, “Canada thrives because we are Canadian,” and rejecting the notion of economic dependence on Washington.
Beyond trade, Trump also expressed frustration over Canada’s opposition to the US-led “Golden Dome” missile defense project in Greenland. He claimed that Ottawa is undermining continental security while benefiting from American protection. As a direct consequence of these disagreements, Trump announced that Canada’s invitation to join the “Board of Peace”—a high-level leadership initiative coordinated with the UN—has been rescinded.
Economists warn that a 100% tariff would cause unprecedented disruption to the integrated North American supply chain, affecting everything from automotive parts to energy and agriculture.
