LONDON — Pop icon Robbie Williams has officially cemented his place in music history by surpassing The Beatles as the artist with the most Number 1 albums in the history of the British charts. On Friday evening, January 23, 2026, the Official Charts Company confirmed that Williams’ latest studio effort, Britpop, debuted at the top spot, marking his 16th chart-topping album.
The 51-year-old singer had previously been tied with the “Fab Four” since January 2025, when the soundtrack to his biopic, Better Man, reached Number 1. With the success of Britpop, Williams now stands alone as the record holder for solo artists and groups alike.

The “Selfish” Strategy
The record-breaking achievement was no accident. Williams was remarkably transparent about his desire to overtake the legendary band, even delaying the album’s release to avoid a chart battle with global powerhouse Taylor Swift.
“We’re all pretending the scheduling change is not about Taylor Swift, but it fucking is,” Williams admitted during a London show in October 2025. “You can’t compete with that. I’m being selfish. How many times in your life do you get to have the most Number 1 albums the UK’s ever had?”
Originally slated for October 2025, the album was pushed back to February 2026 before being surprise-released digitally on January 16 to secure an uncompetitive window.
A Career Built on Anthems
Since his solo debut Life Thru a Lens in 1997, Williams has maintained a nearly flawless track record. Of his 13 studio albums, only 2009’s Reality Killed the Video Star failed to reach the summit, peaking at Number 2.
Official UK Number 1 Album Tallies:
-
Robbie Williams – 16
-
The Beatles – 15
-
The Rolling Stones / Taylor Swift – 14 (tie)
-
Elvis Presley – 13
Note: These figures include studio albums, soundtracks, and greatest hits collections. If Williams’ five Number 1 albums as a member of Take That were included, his total would rise to 21, though official records separate group and solo tallies.
The Sound of “Britpop”
The new album has been hailed as a return to the guitar-driven, anthemic sound of the mid-90s that defined Williams’ early solo career. It features collaborations with former Take That bandmate Gary Barlow, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, and Black Sabbath legend Tony Iommi.
“Britpop is the record I’ve always wanted to make,” Williams said in a statement. “To see it become my 16th Number 1 means everything to me. Thank you to the fans who have made my dreams come true.”
