LYON/BRUSSELS — In one of the largest coordinated strikes against pharmaceutical crime to date, law enforcement authorities across several continents have dismantled five underground laboratories and seized more than €33 million worth of counterfeit medicines and illicit doping substances.

The massive crackdown, dubbed Operation SHIELD VI, was coordinated by Europol and supported by law enforcement, customs, and anti-doping agencies from nearly 30 countries. The operation, which concluded this week, targeted the manufacture and trafficking of falsified pharmaceuticals, ranging from life-saving medicines to popular lifestyle drugs and performance enhancers.

Massive Human and Material Toll

The scale of the enforcement action is staggering. According to official figures released today by Europol:

  • 3,354 individuals have been prosecuted.

  • 43 organized crime groups were identified and investigated.

  • 907 new investigations were launched globally.

  • 66 websites used to market the illicit products were taken down.

Beyond the labs, officers intercepted a mountain of illegal goods, including over 3.2 million counterfeit tablets and nearly 1 million vials of active ingredients.

The Rise of “Fake Fat-Burners” and Synthetic Threats

A primary focus of this year’s operation was the alarming proliferation of counterfeit Semaglutide-based products. As global demand for weight-loss “miracle” drugs surges, criminal networks have flooded the market with fakes that often contain no active ingredients or, more dangerously, harmful substitutes.

“These aren’t just petty criminals; these are sophisticated networks exploiting human vulnerability for profit,” said a Europol spokesperson. The agency also raised a “red alert” over the discovery of fake medicines containing nitazenespotent synthetic opioids that are many times stronger than fentanyl and pose a lethal risk to unsuspecting consumers.

Operation “Fabryka” and the Supply Chain Blow

SHIELD VI follows closely on the heels of Operation Fabryka, which concluded in late January. That specific branch of the investigation led to the dismantling of 24 industrial-scale synthetic drug labs and the seizure of 1,000 tonnes of precursor chemicals—enough to produce over 300 tonnes of MDMA and amphetamines.

In Spain, the Guardia Civil reported dismantling a major cell that imported illegal cosmetic medicines from South Korea, distributing them through both legitimate and “clandestine” beauty clinics.

A Warning to Consumers

The Permanent Forum of International Pharmaceutical Crime (PFIPC) warned that the digital frontier remains the primary battleground. Criminals are increasingly using social media “bots” and encrypted messaging apps to bypass traditional web filters.

“If you are buying prescription medication from a wellness storefront on social media or a non-traditional online pharmacy, you are likely funding organized crime and gambling with your life,” warned one official. “The packaging may look perfect, but the contents are often toxic.”

As the global recovery from these raids begins, authorities emphasize that while €33 million has been taken off the streets, the illicit market continues to evolve, necessitating even more advanced AI-powered detection tools for the year ahead.
