WASHINGTON D.C. — Appearing on Hannity Tuesday night, former CIA Director and retired General David Petraeus characterized the recent U.S.-led daytime strike on Iran’s Supreme Council as a “truly historic” military achievement that has effectively decapitated the regime’s senior command structure.
The strike targeted a high-level meeting in Tehran where officials had gathered to finalize a successor to the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The operation, part of the broader Operation Epic Fury, has left the Islamic Republic in a state of unprecedented political disarray.
Decapitating the Command
Petraeus noted that the strike’s precision achieved what many intelligence analysts thought nearly impossible: neutralizing a vast portion of the regime’s decision-making body in a single kinetic event.
“This achieved something truly historic,” Petraeus told host Sean Hannity. He emphasized that by striking during a succession deliberation, the U.S. and its allies did more than just eliminate individual targets; they disrupted the very mechanism of the theocracy’s continuity.

Regime in Crisis
The strike has forced the Iranian leadership into a frantic scramble to stabilize the government. With reports emerging that the IRGC has pushed forward Mojtaba Khamenei to fill the vacuum, Petraeus suggested that the internal friction within the regime is likely at an all-time high.
The former general argued that the loss of seasoned commanders and senior clerics simultaneously creates a “leadership deficit” that cannot be easily filled by younger, less experienced figures, even those with dynastic ties.
Total Degradation of Capabilities
The interview followed a series of updates from the White House, where President Trump claimed that U.S. forces have “knocked out everything” regarding Iran’s traditional military infrastructure.

The sentiment was echoed by other military analysts on the network, including former TOPGUN pilots who suggested that Iran’s conventional military response options have dwindled to “zero.” While asymmetric threats—such as the drone strike on RAF Akrotiri and the deadly attack in Kuwait—remain a concern, the capability for Iran to wage a traditional state-on-state war has been severely compromised.
Despite the tactical success, the administration warned that the campaign is far from over. Vice President JD Vance noted that the primary objective remains ensuring Iran “can never have a nuclear weapon,” a goal the administration believes is finally within reach following the dismantling of the regime’s command and control centers.
