LOS ANGELES — The era of big hair and even bigger anthems is coming to the big screen. Universal Pictures has emerged victorious in a high-stakes bidding war to develop a feature film biopic centered on the early years of Bon Jovi.

The project, which was finalized on March 10, 2026, will be an authorized look at the band’s meteoric rise, with the direct participation of frontman Jon Bon Jovi. This collaboration grants the studio full access to the group’s legendary music catalog, ensuring hits like “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “You Give Love a Bad Name” will anchor the soundtrack.

From the Power Station to the Podium

The film is expected to trace the band’s journey from its humble 1983 beginnings in New Jersey to its global breakthrough. Key narrative beats will include:

  • Jon Bongiovi’s early days working as an assistant at New York’s Power Station studio.

  • The formation of the core lineup with David Bryan, Tico Torres, and Alec John Such.

  • The creative struggle leading up to their 1986 juggernaut, Slippery When Wet, which sold over 30 million copies worldwide.

According to reports, the script will be penned by Cody Brotter, a rising writer known for his acclaimed Black List script Drudge and the recent thriller Killing Satoshi.

Behind the Scenes

The production team brings a mix of prestige and deep-rooted knowledge of the band’s history. Kevin J. Walsh, whose credits include Manchester by the Sea and House of Gucci, will produce alongside Gotham Chopra. Chopra is uniquely suited for the task, having directed the 2024 Hulu docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story.

While Chopra’s documentary provided a panoramic view of the band’s 40-year career, this new Universal feature will focus specifically on the “supernova” success of the 1980s. Universal’s Director of Production Development, Jacqueline Garell, is set to oversee the project.

Casting Speculation

As of March 2026, no director or cast members have been announced. However, the announcement has already ignited a firestorm of online speculation regarding who can capture the charisma and vocal range of a young Jon Bon Jovi. The project joins a growing slate of high-profile music biopics at Universal, including the upcoming Michael Jackson film, Michael.
