Greek authorities have arrested an 89-year-old man accused of carrying out two separate shooting incidents in central Athens, leaving at least four people injured in what officials describe as a rare act of gun violence in the country.
According to police, the suspect first opened fire inside a social security office, wounding an employee. He then fled the scene and later carried out a second attack at a courthouse in another part of the city, where several individuals were injured.
The man was eventually apprehended near the city of Patras, approximately 130 miles west of Athens, following a manhunt.
Officials said the suspect used a shotgun in both incidents. At the courthouse, initial reports indicate that he fired toward the floor inside one of the offices. The resulting ricochets caused minor injuries to at least three female court employees.
Stratis Dounias stated that the injuries were caused by scattered pellets rather than direct gunfire, suggesting the attack may not have been aimed at specific individuals.
The motive behind the shootings remains unclear. State broadcaster ERT reported that the suspect left behind envelopes containing documents, which he allegedly claimed explained his actions. Authorities are now examining those materials as part of the investigation.
Gun violence is relatively uncommon in Greece, where strict firearm regulations are in place. The incident has therefore raised concern among officials and the public, particularly given the unusual profile of the suspect.
Police continue to investigate the case, focusing on the suspect’s background and potential grievances that may have led to the attacks.
