Nottingham Forest claimed a narrow but valuable 1-0 victory over Aston Villa in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final, with a second-half penalty proving decisive in a tightly contested encounter.
The only goal of the match came in the 71st minute, when Chris Wood converted from the spot after a handball by Lucas Digne. Wood struck confidently into the top corner, leaving Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez with no chance.
The result gives Forest a slender advantage heading into the return leg at Villa Park, while Unai Emery’s side faces an uphill task to avoid a third consecutive semi-final exit in European competition.
The match itself offered few clear-cut chances, though both sides had moments to break the deadlock. Villa came close in the first half through Morgan Rogers, whose curling effort was well saved by Forest goalkeeper Stefan Ortega. Later, Ollie Watkins had Villa’s best opportunity, but his close-range volley was directed straight at Ortega.
Forest, meanwhile, nearly scored spectacularly before halftime. A flowing move ended with a close-range effort from Igor Jesus, only for Martinez to produce a remarkable double save, first slowing the ball with one hand and then clawing it off the line with the other.
The game remained finely balanced until the decisive moment. Omari Hutchinson kept a ball alive near the byline, and his cross struck Digne’s raised arm. After a VAR review overturned an initial decision, the referee pointed to the spot, allowing Wood to secure the breakthrough.
Villa pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, with Youri Tielemans firing over from distance, but they struggled to create sustained pressure against a disciplined Forest defense.
The tie remains open, but Forest will take confidence from their first European semi-final appearance since 1984, while Villa must regroup quickly if they are to turn the contest around in the second leg.
