The U.S. Central Command confirmed that American forces destroyed six Iranian boats and intercepted multiple missiles and drones during a military operation in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday.
Admiral Brad Cooper said the action was part of ongoing efforts to ensure safe maritime navigation through one of the world’s most critical shipping corridors. The operation involved intercepting cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, which US officials say posed a threat to vessels in the region.
Cooper also warned Iranian forces to maintain distance from US military assets operating in the area, emphasizing that any escalation could lead to further defensive measures.
The developments come amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, with the US continuing to enforce a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports. According to CENTCOM, the blockade has already yielded results “beyond expectations,” though officials did not provide specific details.
Earlier, Donald Trump reiterated that Iran would face severe consequences if it targeted American vessels participating in what he described as “Project Freedom,” an initiative designed to assist ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz and restore safe passage through the waterway.
Trump said the United States would guide vessels and protect maritime traffic, framing the effort as essential to global trade and regional stability.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital chokepoint for global energy flows, and continued military activity in the area has raised concerns about the risk of broader conflict and disruptions to international shipping.
Analysts warn that while such operations aim to secure navigation, they also increase the likelihood of confrontation, particularly as both sides continue to exchange warnings and demonstrate military capabilities.
