Three members of the Royal Navy have been killed after a military helicopter crashed during a training exercise in Devon, prompting an outpouring of condolences from senior government officials, military leaders, and the Royal Family.

The accident occurred shortly before 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday near Sourton Down, close to the town of Okehampton on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. The aircraft involved was a Royal Navy Merlin Mk4 helicopter operating as part of a training mission when it came down in a field under circumstances that remain under investigation.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at approximately 3:45 a.m., according to Devon and Cornwall Police, who responded alongside search and rescue teams.

Ministry of Defence Confirms Fatalities

In a statement released later on Wednesday, the Ministry of Defence confirmed that three service personnel had lost their lives in the crash.

“It is with deep sadness that we can confirm three members of the Royal Navy have died during a helicopter training exercise on Wednesday, 3 June near Sourton, Devon,” the ministry said.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released, with officials stating that their families have been informed and have requested privacy before further details are made public.

The Ministry of Defence added that its thoughts and sympathies were with the families, friends and colleagues of those who died.

National Leaders Pay Tribute

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the deaths as “utterly tragic” and expressed his condolences to those affected.

“My thoughts are with the families, friends and loved ones of the three members of the Royal Navy who sadly lost their lives this morning,” Starmer said. “Thank you to the emergency services responding to this horrific incident.”

Defence Secretary John Healey also paid tribute to the fallen personnel, saying he was “devastated” by the loss.

“They served with excellence and will be much missed,” Healey said. “All our thoughts are with their families, friends and those they served with at this incredibly sad time.”

It is understood that King Charles III is privately writing to the families of the deceased service members to offer his condolences.

Investigation Underway

General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, First Sea Lord and head of the Royal Navy, described the incident as a profound loss for the naval community.

“I am deeply saddened to share the news that three crew members onboard a Royal Navy Merlin Mk4 helicopter have died after it crashed in the early hours of this morning near Sourton, Devon,” he said.

“I know this will come as a huge shock to all in our Naval community, and my deepest condolences go out to the families, friends and loved ones impacted by this tragedy.”

Jenkins confirmed that a full investigation has begun to determine the cause of the crash and that further information will be released as it becomes available.

Strategic Training Area

The crash site lies close to Okehampton Battle Camp, a military training facility frequently used by helicopter crews from the Royal Navy’s Commando Helicopter Force.

The area is located between two major Fleet Air Arm bases: Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton in Somerset and Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall. It is also within reach of HM Naval Base Devonport in Plymouth, one of the Royal Navy’s principal installations.

The Merlin Mk4 is a key component of the Royal Navy’s aviation fleet, used primarily for troop transport, amphibious operations and support missions for the Royal Marines. The aircraft regularly conducts training exercises across southwest England and other military training areas throughout the United Kingdom.

A Nation Mourns

The loss of three service personnel during a routine training mission has sent shockwaves through Britain’s armed forces community. As investigators work to establish what caused the crash, tributes continue to pour in for the sailors who lost their lives while serving their country.

The Royal Navy has pledged to support the families and colleagues affected by the tragedy as the nation reflects on the sacrifice of those who serve in uniform.
