France secured their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage on Monday after a convincing 3-0 victory over Iraq in a match dramatically interrupted by a two-hour weather delay in Philadelphia.

A brace from captain Kylian Mbappé and a goal from Ousmane Dembélé ensured the reigning world runners-up maintained their perfect record in Group I, following their opening 3-1 victory over Senegal.

The match at Lincoln Financial Field became the first fixture of the tournament to be significantly affected by adverse weather conditions. Under United States safety regulations, outdoor sporting events must be suspended if lightning is detected within a 13-kilometre radius. As a result, play was halted at halftime and did not resume for two hours while fans sought shelter inside the stadium.

Mbappé Makes History Again

France took control early and broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when Michael Olise found Mbappé on the right side of the attack. The striker cut inside and fired a powerful shot from outside the penalty area beyond goalkeeper Ahmed Basil.

The goal continued Mbappé’s remarkable scoring run for the national team. On the occasion of his 100th international appearance, the 27-year-old extended his record as France’s all-time leading scorer to 60 goals.

Iraq struggled to create meaningful opportunities throughout the first half and suffered a major setback when captain and leading striker Aymen Hussein was forced off through injury after just 26 minutes.

Storm Halts the Contest

As heavy rain intensified over Philadelphia, the first half concluded with France holding a deserved 1-0 lead. However, the worsening weather conditions forced tournament officials to suspend the match during the interval.

Thousands of supporters left their seats and moved to covered areas of the stadium while organizers monitored the storm. After a delay lasting approximately two hours, the teams returned to the field, and France quickly resumed control.

France Finish the Job

The second goal arrived in the 54th minute after a costly mistake in Iraq’s buildup play. A misunderstanding between defender Zaid Tahseen and goalkeeper Ahmed Basil allowed Dembélé to set up Mbappé, who calmly finished for his second goal of the evening.

The French attack continued to dominate, with Olise striking the crossbar shortly afterward.

Dembélé eventually added France’s third goal in the 66th minute, finishing a precise pass from Olise to score his first goal of the tournament and effectively end Iraqi hopes of a comeback.

Iraq’s only notable chance came in the 75th minute when substitute Ali Al Hamadi directed an effort narrowly wide of the target.

Mbappé came close to completing his hat-trick on several occasions late in the match, but the Iraqi defense and goalkeeper prevented further damage.

Knockout Qualification Secured

The victory moves France to six points from two matches and guarantees qualification for the Round of 32. Didier Deschamps’ side now sit comfortably at the top of Group I and will look to secure first place in their final group match.

For Iraq, the defeat leaves their qualification hopes hanging by a thread after a second consecutive loss.

Beyond the result, the night also marked another milestone for Mbappé. With 16 goals in 16 World Cup appearances, he now stands level with former German striker Miroslav Klose and only two goals behind Lionel Messi in the tournament’s all-time scoring rankings.

France once again demonstrated why they remain among the favourites for the title, overcoming both a determined opponent and unprecedented weather disruption to continue their march through the competition.
