The Netherlands confirmed their status as one of the most impressive teams of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage with a convincing 3,1 victory over Tunisia in Kansas City, securing first place in Group F and extending their impressive run of form ahead of the knockout rounds.
Already assured of progressing to the Round of 32, Ronald Koeman’s side once again displayed attacking fluency and defensive control, while Tunisia bowed out of the tournament after suffering a third consecutive defeat.
With qualification already secured for the Dutch and Tunisia eliminated before kick-off, pride and final group standings were the main objectives. The Oranje responded by producing another dominant display, building on the confidence gained from their emphatic victory over Sweden in the previous round.
The breakthrough arrived early and once again highlighted the influence of Denzel Dumfries. Constantly pushing forward from right back, Dumfries delivered one of his trademark low crosses into the penalty area. Tunisia midfielder Ellyes Skhiri attempted to intercept but inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, handing the Netherlands an early advantage.
The Dutch continued to dictate possession and doubled their lead soon afterward. Following a well-worked free kick delivered by Tijjani Reijnders, captain Virgil van Dijk headed the ball back across goal, allowing in-form striker Brian Brobbey to finish from close range for his third goal of the tournament.
Despite controlling possession throughout the remainder of the first half, the Netherlands were unable to add to their advantage, while Tunisia struggled to create meaningful opportunities.
The African side emerged with greater purpose after the interval and found a route back into the match before the hour mark. From a corner delivered from the right, Hazem Mastouri escaped his marker and powered an excellent header beyond the Dutch goalkeeper to reduce the deficit.
Any hopes of a Tunisian comeback were short-lived.
The Netherlands responded almost immediately from another set piece. This time, a corner from the left found Jan Paul van Hecke at the near post, where the defender guided a precise header into the net to restore the two-goal cushion and effectively end the contest.
With victory all but secured, Koeman rotated several key players ahead of the knockout stage, while his team comfortably managed the closing minutes without allowing Tunisia another route back into the match.
Tunisia exits the World Cup with three defeats from three matches, having scored just two goals while conceding twelve during a difficult campaign.
The Netherlands, meanwhile, finished the group stage unbeaten and with growing confidence. Their dynamic attacking football and defensive organization have established them among the tournament’s strongest contenders as they prepare for a Round of 32 meeting with Morocco, runners-up in Group C.
Denzel Dumfries was once again one of the outstanding performers. Constantly driving forward from the right flank, he forced the opening own goal, contributed throughout the attack, and demonstrated the energy and versatility that have become trademarks of Koeman’s side.
One unusual moment came at the start of the second half, when play was briefly delayed after one Tunisian player failed to return from the dressing room on time. Referee Katia García initially restarted the match before realizing Tunisia was not at full strength, forcing the restart procedure to be repeated.
