George Russell returned to the top step of the podium on Sunday after claiming a commanding victory at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix, converting pole position into a crucial win for Mercedes at the Red Bull Ring. The triumph marks Russell’s second victory of the season and significantly strengthens his challenge for the Formula 1 World Championship.

Russell controlled the race throughout, surrendering the lead only during the pit stop cycle before comfortably reestablishing his advantage. The British driver crossed the finish line ahead of Max Verstappen, while teammate Kimi Antonelli completed the podium after an impressive late race charge that saw him finish just three tenths of a second behind the Red Bull driver.

Oscar Piastri secured fourth place for McLaren, followed by Lewis Hamilton in fifth. Isack Hadjar, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, Liam Lawson, and Arvid Lindblad completed the top ten and the points-paying positions.

Strong start sets the tone

Starting from pole position after Saturday’s controversial qualifying session, Russell made an excellent getaway despite immediate pressure behind him. Hamilton overtook Charles Leclerc at the start to move into second, while Verstappen quickly climbed through the field after an aggressive opening lap.

The Dutch driver engaged Hamilton in a thrilling early battle, with both drivers exchanging positions and pushing each other to the limit through several corners before Verstappen finally secured second place.

Russell, meanwhile, steadily built a gap at the front and remained in control throughout the opening stint.

Strategy shapes the race

The first round of pit stops reshuffled the order, but Mercedes executed its strategy flawlessly. Russell maintained his advantage after stopping, while Verstappen emerged ahead of Hamilton following another intense battle.

Virtual Safety Car periods caused by the retirements of Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas added strategic complexity, allowing several teams to adjust their race plans without dramatically altering the running order.

Antonelli delivered one of the standout drives of the afternoon. Despite reporting brake concerns, the Italian maintained excellent pace, overtook Leclerc around the outside at Turn 4, and steadily closed the gap to Verstappen during the closing laps. Although he reached the Red Bull’s rear wing on the final lap, he was unable to launch a decisive overtaking attempt.

Ferrari struggles as McLaren remains solid

Ferrari showed flashes of pace but struggled to convert it into a stronger result. Hamilton secured fifth place, while Leclerc lost ground following damage to his front wing during a battle with Piastri and eventually finished eighth.

McLaren enjoyed a relatively quiet afternoon. Piastri delivered another consistent performance in fourth, while Norris crossed the line in seventh after an uneventful race.

Bortoleto narrowly misses the points

Gabriel Bortoleto finished 11th for Audi after adopting an alternative strategy by starting on soft tyres. The Brazilian gained one position during the race and remained close to the points throughout, ultimately finishing just 11 seconds behind tenth place.

While the result did not yield championship points, it represented another encouraging performance in the midfield battle, with Bortoleto once again outperforming teammate Nico Hülkenberg.

Championship battle tightens

Russell’s victory reshuffles the championship standings, moving the Mercedes driver back into second place overall, reducing the gap to the championship leader to 40 points.

Formula 1 now heads into a short break before returning next weekend for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where Mercedes will hope to continue its renewed momentum.
