Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has accused Ukrainian authorities of facilitating the transit of narcotics from Latin America into Europe, alleging that Kyiv has allowed criminal networks to use the country as a corridor in exchange for financial and logistical benefits.
In a statement released on Monday, the SVR claimed that Ukraine’s security services were deliberately permitting drug trafficking operations to expand through the country as Kyiv seeks additional sources of funding amid what Moscow described as insufficient financial support from its Western allies.
According to the Russian intelligence agency, Latin American drug cartels have also assisted Ukraine in recruiting foreign mercenaries to fight alongside its armed forces.
The SVR further alleged that criminal organizations are attempting to increase shipments of narcotics, including fentanyl, to European markets as United States authorities intensify anti-drug operations across the Americas.
The agency claimed that Ukraine has become an attractive transit route because of what it described as weakened border and customs controls resulting from the ongoing war.
Russian intelligence also identified ports in Ukraine’s Odesa region as the principal transshipment hubs for narcotics destined for Europe, with alleged trafficking routes extending through Poland, Moldova, and Romania.
In addition, the SVR claimed that Latin American criminal organizations are interested in gaining access to Ukraine’s illicit weapons market alongside expanding drug trafficking operations.
Ukraine did not immediately respond to the allegations, and no independent evidence was provided by the Russian intelligence service to support its claims.
The accusations come amid continuing tensions between Moscow and Kyiv, with information warfare remaining a significant element of the broader conflict alongside military operations on the ground.
As of publication, no international organizations or independent investigators had publicly verified the allegations made by the Russian intelligence service.
