Morocco continued their impressive run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by defeating the Netherlands 3,2 on penalties after a dramatic 1,1 draw following extra time in Monterrey, securing a place in the Round of 16 after one of the tournament’s most captivating knockout matches.
The Atlas Lions dominated large portions of the contest and were rewarded for their persistence, overcoming a resilient Dutch side in a penalty shootout that brought an emotional end to Monterrey’s role as a host city for the competition.
Morocco Takes Control Early
The knockout clash was played at an intense pace, with Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio facing a demanding evening as both teams battled fiercely across the pitch.
Morocco gradually established control after an evenly contested opening period. El Aynaoui came close to breaking the deadlock from a corner, only to be denied by an instinctive save from Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. Moments later, Achraf Hakimi unleashed a powerful effort from distance, but Verbruggen once again produced an outstanding stop.
While the Netherlands enjoyed long spells of possession, they struggled to create meaningful opportunities against Morocco’s disciplined defensive structure, expertly marshalled by Noussair Mazraoui.
Dutch Strike Against the Run of Play
Morocco resumed the second half with renewed confidence and continued to threaten. Hakimi rattled the crossbar before forcing another crucial intervention from Micky van de Ven inside the penalty area.
Despite Morocco’s dominance, the Netherlands struck unexpectedly in the 72nd minute.
Substitute Wout Weghorst headed the ball into the path of Crysencio Summerville, who delivered a precise cross for Cody Gakpo to finish from close range. The goal, Gakpo’s third of the tournament, was dedicated to his partner following the recent loss of their unborn child.
Diop Rescues Morocco
With elimination looming, Morocco continued to push forward and finally found their reward deep into stoppage time.
Central defender Diop rose inside the penalty area to head home a superb cross from substitute Talbi, sending the match into extra time and igniting celebrations among the Moroccan supporters.
The Atlas Lions carried their momentum into the additional 30 minutes and nearly completed the comeback when Soufiane Rahimi dribbled into the box, only to be denied by yet another exceptional save from Verbruggen.
Penalty Shootout Decides the Contest
Neither side could find a winner during extra time, leaving penalties to determine who would advance.
Although El Aynaoui struck the crossbar for Morocco, the Netherlands faltered under pressure as Justin Kluivert, Jurrien Timber and Crysencio Summerville all failed to convert their spot kicks.
Saibari stepped forward for Morocco’s decisive penalty and calmly converted to send the Atlas Lions into the Round of 16.
Verbruggen’s Heroics Not Enough
Despite the heartbreaking defeat, Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen delivered one of the standout individual performances of the tournament.
The 23-year-old produced at least five outstanding saves, repeatedly denying Morocco throughout regulation and extra time to keep the Netherlands alive.
Ultimately, however, even his remarkable display could not prevent Morocco from earning a deserved qualification.
Morocco will now face Canada in the Round of 16 as they seek to build on their historic fourth-place finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and continue another memorable campaign on the world stage.
