Norway secured their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Ivory Coast 2,1 in a hard-fought encounter at Dallas Stadium on Tuesday. A late winner from Erling Haaland ensured the Scandinavian side advanced to the knockout stage, where they will now face five-time world champions Brazil.
The match remained closely contested throughout, with Norway taking the lead shortly before halftime through Antonio Nusa. The talented winger found the breakthrough in the 39th minute, giving the Norwegians a deserved advantage after an energetic first half.
Ivory Coast responded after the interval and gradually increased the pressure. Their persistence paid off in the 74th minute when Diallo equalised, setting up a tense finish as both teams searched for the decisive goal.
As the game appeared to be heading toward extra time, Erling Haaland once again delivered when his team needed him most. The Manchester City striker struck in the 86th minute, scoring his fifth goal of the tournament to restore Norway’s lead and secure a dramatic 2,1 victory.
Haaland’s latest goal further strengthens his status as one of the standout performers of the World Cup and continues his remarkable scoring form on the international stage.
Norway’s reward is a blockbuster Round of 16 clash against Brazil, scheduled for Sunday. The South American giants booked their place after coming from behind to defeat Japan 2,1, producing a resilient performance to continue their quest for a record sixth World Cup title.
Several other nations have already confirmed their places in the next round. Paraguay produced one of the tournament’s biggest surprises by eliminating Germany, while Canada and Morocco will face each other on Saturday for a place in the quarterfinals.
With confidence growing and Haaland in prolific form, Norway will believe they can challenge Brazil in what promises to be one of the most anticipated knockout matches of the competition.
