Defending world champions Argentina produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Egypt 3,2 in Atlanta and secure their place in the quarter-finals.

For much of the evening, Egypt looked on course to produce the biggest upset of the tournament. However, inspired by captain Lionel Messi and a remarkable late surge, Argentina reminded the football world why they remain the reigning champions.

Egypt Stuns the Champions

The match began at a high tempo, with both sides showing attacking intent from the opening whistle.

While Argentina sought to dominate possession, Egypt responded with confidence and threatened on the counterattack. Their bold approach was rewarded after just 15 minutes.

A well-worked move down the right flank ended with Marwan Attia delivering a precise cross into the penalty area, where defender Yasser Ibrahim headed home to give Egypt a shock 1,0 lead.

The African side continued to defend with discipline while frustrating Argentina’s attacking stars throughout the first half.

Egypt Doubles the Advantage

Argentina searched for an equalizer after the break, but Egypt remained dangerous whenever they attacked.

Their dream appeared even closer when Mostafa Zico found the net in the 67th minute, doubling Egypt’s advantage and leaving the defending champions facing elimination.

At 2,0 down, Argentina had never looked more vulnerable during this World Cup campaign.

The Champions Respond

The turning point arrived in the closing stages.

Cristian Romero ignited Argentina’s comeback in the 79th minute, pulling one goal back and injecting belief into Lionel Scaloni’s side.

Just four minutes later, Lionel Messi once again delivered on football’s biggest stage. The Argentine captain calmly finished to level the match at 2,2, sending the crowd in Atlanta into celebration and shifting all momentum toward the South Americans.

With Egypt visibly exhausted after defending for much of the match, Argentina continued to press for a winner.

Enzo Fernández Completes the Miracle

Deep into stoppage time, Enzo Fernández completed the dramatic turnaround.

The midfielder found the decisive goal in the 90+2 minute, sealing an unforgettable 3,2 victory and sparking emotional celebrations among Argentina’s players and supporters.

The comeback ensured the reigning world champions avoided one of the greatest shocks in World Cup history.

Quarter-final Awaits

Argentina now advances to the quarter-finals, where it will face the winner of the final Round of 16 match between Colombia and Switzerland.

While the defending champions remain alive in their quest to retain the World Cup trophy, Egypt leaves the tournament with its head held high after producing one of the most courageous performances of the competition and pushing one of football’s greatest teams to the very limit.

Once again, when everything seemed lost, Argentina demonstrated the resilience, quality and championship mentality that have defined its recent success, with Messi once more proving why he remains one of the greatest players in football history.
