Benfica delivered the most emphatic performance of the Liga Portugal season so far, demolishing Casa Pia 7,0 in Rio Maior to claim their first league victory of the 2026/27 campaign.
After being held to a frustrating 2,2 draw by Académico de Viseu on the opening weekend, Marco Silva’s side responded spectacularly. Gianluca Prestianni and Rafa Silva established a two-goal advantage inside the opening 14 minutes before Vangelis Pavlidis destroyed Casa Pia with a remarkable second-half hat-trick.
An own goal from Lawrence Ofori and a seventh from Jhon Durán completed a night that transformed Benfica’s early league picture.
The Eagles leave Matchday 2 with four points and a +7 goal difference, while Casa Pia remain without a point after two matches.
Benfica needed a response
The context made this more than an ordinary August fixture.
Benfica’s opening 2,2 draw at home against newly promoted Académico de Viseu had immediately raised questions. In a championship where FC Porto, Arouca and Marítimo had already collected maximum points from their opening two games, another dropped result would have created an uncomfortable early gap.
There was little evidence of anxiety once the match began.

Prestianni opens the floodgates

Vangelis Pavlidis turned a comfortable Benfica advantage into a rout.
The Greek striker scored his first in the 47th minute.
Two minutes later, he scored again.
Then came another in the 54th.
Three goals in seven minutes.
It was an extraordinary burst of finishing that took the score from 2,0 to 5,0 and effectively ended the competitive element of the match before the second half was ten minutes old.
For Pavlidis, the hat trick represented much more than three goals in an already dominant victory. It was the kind of individual performance capable of establishing early momentum in a goalscoring campaign.
Benfica had arrived in Rio Maior looking for their first victory.
By the 54th minute, they were producing a statement.
Casa Pia collapse
Once the fifth went in, Casa Pia’s night deteriorated further.
Lawrence Ofori put the ball into his own net in the 58th minute, extending Benfica’s advantage to six.
Jhon Durán then completed the scoring three minutes later.

From Prestianni’s opener in the third minute to Durán’s goal in the 61st, Benfica had scored seven times in less than an hour of football.
The most devastating period came immediately after the interval, when five goals between the 47th and 61st minutes transformed a controlled victory into the largest winning margin of Matchday 2.

From frustration to statement
The importance of the result becomes clearer when compared with Benfica’s opening weekend.
Against Académico de Viseu, Benfica scored twice but were unable to convert their attacking superiority into three points.
Against Casa Pia, there was no such problem.
Seven goals, a clean sheet and three points represented an emphatic correction.
It also dramatically improved Benfica’s early statistical position.
Marco Silva’s team now has four points from two matches, with nine goals scored and two conceded.
Their +7 goal difference is the best in the division after the opening two rounds, although Arouca, FC Porto and Marítimo remain ahead on points.
That distinction matters.
Benfica are not yet among the perfect starters, but Monday night’s performance ensured they remain firmly attached to the leading group.
Pavlidis takes centre stage
There were several contributors to Benfica’s victory, but one performance inevitably dominates the match report.
Pavlidis scored three times in seven minutes.
A hat trick is notable under any circumstances. Producing one in such a compressed period is something different.
His first goal killed any realistic prospect of a Casa Pia comeback. His second turned control into dominance. His third completed the decisive individual sequence of the match.
It was the defining performance of Matchday 2.
For Benfica, having a striker capable of converting periods of pressure into rapid sequences of goals could prove particularly important across a long championship campaign.
A difficult beginning for Casa Pia
For Casa Pia, the result represents a severe early setback.
They leave the opening two rounds without a point and with the psychological impact of conceding seven goals at home.
One heavy defeat does not define a season, particularly in August, but the manner of the second-half collapse will require a response.
The immediate challenge is therefore as much psychological as tactical.
Casa Pia must prevent one extraordinary evening from becoming something more damaging.
Benfica join the four-point group
The result also reshapes the early table.
Arouca, FC Porto and Marítimo remain the only teams with maximum points after two matches.
Behind them, Benfica join Nacional, Sporting CP and Santa Clara on four points.
Benfica’s enormous goal difference gives them an important statistical advantage within that group.
After two matchdays, the leading picture therefore contains an intriguing mixture.
Arouca are the early surprise leaders.
Defending champions Porto have started with two victories and two clean sheets.
Promoted Marítimo have taken six points from six.
Sporting remain unbeaten.
And now Benfica have produced the most destructive attacking performance of the campaign.
Matchday 2 ends with an exclamation mark
The final scheduled match of the round provided an extraordinary conclusion to four days of Liga Portugal football.
Sporting survived Vitória’s second-half comeback.
Porto remained perfect at Rio Ave.
Arouca scored four against Moreirense.
Marítimo found a stoppage-time winner at Famalicão.
Nacional collected their first victory.
Santa Clara won in Viseu.
And then Benfica scored seven.
SC Braga against Gil Vicente remains postponed and will be rearranged, meaning the historical record of Matchday 2 still contains one outstanding fixture.
But the played programme has its defining image.
It belongs to Benfica.
What this means for Benfica
The championship cannot be won in the second week of August.
It can, however, begin to develop patterns.
Benfica needed evidence that the opening draw was a stumble rather than a warning.
They found considerably more than that in Rio Maior.
Prestianni scored.
Rafa Silva scored.
Durán scored.
Pavlidis scored three.
Seven goals came from an attack that had spent the previous week dealing with questions about two dropped points.
The next challenge will be consistency.
Producing seven goals once is spectacular. Turning attacking superiority into victories week after week is what creates championship campaigns.
For one night, however, there was nothing ambiguous about Benfica’s message.
