China has expressed its commitment to strengthening ties with the United Kingdom, aiming for a more stable and cooperative relationship, according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The announcement follows Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s official visit to Britain, marking the first such trip in a decade.
During his meetings with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Foreign Minister David Lammy, and National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, Wang emphasized the need for increased strategic communication and mutual trust between the two nations. With Britain’s Labour government prioritizing diplomatic improvements, Starmer reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering “consistent and respectful” relations with China. His government has signaled a shift from the strained relations of previous Conservative governments, with a focus on deepening cooperation in trade, investment, and infrastructure.
The discussions also touched on key global challenges, including climate change, artificial intelligence, and clean energy. Both nations agreed to accelerate preparations for institutional dialogues on economic and industrial cooperation, as well as health initiatives.

He also raised concerns about Beijing’s sanctions on British parliamentarians.
On international security, Wang reiterated China’s stance on the Ukraine war, advocating for de-escalation and diplomatic solutions. “China welcomes all efforts committed to peace talks and supports building a balanced, effective, and sustainable European security architecture,” he stated.
