BANGKOK – The death toll from the massive earthquake that struck Myanmar nearly a week ago has risen to 3,085 as more bodies continue to be recovered, the country’s military-led government announced on Thursday.

In a brief statement, Myanmar’s military confirmed that another 4,715 people have been injured, and 341 remain missing following the 7.7 magnitude quake that devastated multiple regions.

Widespread Destruction and Rising Casualties

The earthquake’s epicenter was near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, causing thousands of buildings to collapse, roads to buckle, and bridges to be destroyed. Local reports suggest that the actual number of casualties may be much higher than the official figures, as many areas remain inaccessible due to damaged infrastructure and disrupted communications.

A Disaster Amid Civil Unrest

The disaster has exacerbated Myanmar’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, which was already dire following the 2021 military coup that ousted the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. According to the United Nations, more than 3 million people had already been displaced, with nearly 20 million in need of humanitarian aid before the earthquake struck.

Fears have grown that ongoing conflict between the military and armed resistance groups could hinder rescue and relief efforts. In response, Myanmar’s military announced a temporary ceasefire on Wednesday, set to last until April 22. However, the statement warned that “necessary measures” would still be taken against opposition groups if they attempted to use the ceasefire to regroup, train, or launch attacks.

Rescue Efforts Extend to Neighboring Thailand

The earthquake’s impact was also felt in neighboring Thailand, where a skyscraper under construction collapsed in Bangkok. Search and rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate survivors, as Thai Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reported that possible signs of life were detected under the rubble.

So far, 22 people have been confirmed dead and 35 injured in Bangkok, with most casualties resulting from the collapse of the unfinished high-rise building.

Humanitarian Response and Uncertain Future

As Myanmar grapples with the aftermath of one of the most devastating earthquakes in its history, aid agencies warn that the situation could worsen. Limited access to affected areas, combined with political instability, threatens to leave thousands without critical assistance.

International organizations have called for immediate and unhindered access to deliver aid, but with the military maintaining strict control over relief operations, the future of Myanmar’s earthquake recovery remains uncertain.
