New Delhi / IslamabadHostilities have intensified between India and Pakistan following a series of overnight attacks and counterattacks along the two countries’ heavily militarized western and Kashmir borders. The Indian Army reported that Pakistani forces launched multiple assaults using drones and munitions, in what it described as “numerous ceasefire violations” across the Line of Control (LoC).

According to an official statement released on X (formerly Twitter), the Indian Army claimed it had “effectively repulsed” the drone attacks and responded firmly to the breaches. “All nefarious designs will be responded to with force,” the statement added.

The flare-up comes just days after India conducted retaliatory strikes on Pakistani territory, following a deadly terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, a popular tourist spot in Indian-administered Kashmir. The Resistance Front, a known extremist group, claimed responsibility for the attack, which left 26 people, including one Nepali citizen, dead. India has accused Pakistan of backing the group—an allegation Islamabad strongly denies.

Pakistan, for its part, has rejected claims of initiating attacks on Indian cities including Pathankot, Srinagar, and Jaisalmer, calling the allegations “unfounded” and “politically motivated.”

Amid the military exchanges, tragedy has struck Pakistani-administered Kashmir, where local officials report five civilians, including a two-year-old girl, were killed in Indian shelling overnight. “Indian forces shelled civilian areas… resulting in the deaths of four people, including a two-year-old girl and injuring 12 others,” said police official Adeel Khan in Kotli district. The shelling reportedly continued well into the night.

The renewed violence threatens to derail the fragile ceasefire agreement reached in 2021. Although both countries have frequently accused one another of ceasefire violations, this week’s events mark one of the most significant escalations since the 1999 Kargil War, which resulted in hundreds of military casualties on both sides.

Efforts to defuse the situation are underway. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated on Wednesday that Ankara is making “every effort” to reduce tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors. Following a call with Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Erdoğan accused unnamed external actors of “pouring fuel on the fire,” and pledged support for Pakistan’s demand for an international investigation into the Pahalgam attack.

As both nations bolster their military presence near the LoC and western border, international observers are urging restraint, warning that further escalation could have devastating consequences not only for South Asia but for global stability.

The situation remains volatile, with analysts noting that diplomatic intervention will be crucial to prevent another full-scale conflict between the two long-standing rivals.
