British driver Lando Norris (McLaren) clinched the pole position for the 11th round of the Formula 1 World Championship, the Austrian Grand Prix, after a thrilling qualifying session on Saturday.

Norris completed his fastest lap in 1:03.971 minutes, securing the top spot ahead of Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) by a margin of 0.521 seconds. Australian Oscar Piastri (McLaren) secured third place, just 0.583 seconds behind Norris.

The final moments of the session were marked by a dramatic spin from French driver Pierre Gasly (Alpine), which resulted in yellow flags being waved at the exact moment when reigning world champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull) was on a flying lap. Verstappen was forced to lift off the accelerator, ultimately resulting in him starting the race from seventh position on the grid.

The qualifying session had already been interrupted earlier during Q2 due to a fire in one of the escape road’s grass areas, adding to the tension and drama.

Norris, who had been in exceptional form throughout the weekend, was the only driver to dip into the 1:03s during qualifying, outperforming the second-place Leclerc by more than half a second.

“I knew there were areas where if I executed well, I could gain time. I’m happy, it’s been a good day. In fact, it’s been a good weekend so far. This is a long season, and tomorrow (Sunday) will be a long race,” Norris commented after securing his third pole of the season and the 12th of his career.

Charles Leclerc, who had not started from the front row since the Monaco Grand Prix, expressed satisfaction with his second-place finish. “It’s been a long time since I started in the first row. It’s a good start to the weekend. Usually, our car performs better in the race than in qualifying, so we hope to challenge Lando more tomorrow,” Leclerc said.

Oscar Piastri, who leads the World Drivers’ Championship, was less thrilled with his third-place result. “We’re aiming for a better finish than third. That’s for sure,” the Australian stated firmly.

The race itself will take place on Sunday, with all eyes on the front-runners as they prepare for what promises to be an exciting and unpredictable battle at the Red Bull Ring.

The Austrian Grand Prix is always known for its intense racing, and with the grid set, fans are eagerly awaiting to see whether Norris can convert his pole position into a win, or if Leclerc, Verstappen, or Piastri will have something to say about that.
