COPENHAGEN — Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s national team camp ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Nations League match against Denmark, deepening uncertainty surrounding the 41 year old captain’s relationship with head coach Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo announced his departure Wednesday after speaking with Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proença.

The decision came only hours after Jesus publicly confirmed that Ronaldo would not start against Denmark, with Gonçalo Ramos expected to lead Portugal’s attack.

“Following the national team coach’s press conference, and after having a conversation with the Portuguese Football Federation president, I decided to leave the national team’s training camp,” Ronaldo said in a social media statement.

“In due course, I will tell the truth to all the Portuguese people about my reasons for leaving the national team, to which I have always been dedicated,” he added.

Ronaldo wished his teammates good luck for the match.

Jesus confirms Ronaldo would remain on the bench

Earlier Wednesday, Jesus made clear that Ronaldo was not part of his planned starting eleven against Denmark.

The Portugal coach indicated that Gonçalo Ramos would retain his place at the front of the attack.

“If I need him, he’ll come on. If I don’t need him, he won’t,” Jesus said of Ronaldo.

Jesus denied that there was a rift between himself and Portugal’s captain, presenting the decision as a matter of team selection.

His comments nevertheless came after an unusual sequence of events surrounding Ronaldo during the current international window.

Unused substitute against Norway

Ronaldo was an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2 to 1 Nations League victory over Norway on Sunday.

It was the first competitive international in more than 18 years in which Ronaldo had been available for Portugal but did not play.

Jesus acknowledged that Ronaldo had been disappointed after warming up during the match only to remain on the bench.

The coach nevertheless insisted that decisions concerning substitutions and the starting lineup remained his responsibility.

Ronaldo subsequently missed team training sessions.

On Wednesday, he arrived at the stadium in Copenhagen with the Portuguese squad but did not participate in the training session.

Hours later, his departure from the national team camp was confirmed.

Ronaldo promises to explain his reasons

Ronaldo’s statement leaves significant questions unanswered about precisely why he decided to leave.

His reference to eventually telling “the truth” about his reasons adds another dimension to the situation, particularly after Jesus publicly denied any dispute between them.

Ronaldo did not provide further details about his conversation with Pedro Proença or identify the specific circumstances that prompted his decision.

The Portuguese Football Federation president therefore appears to have been directly involved in discussions immediately preceding Ronaldo’s departure.

For now, Ronaldo has chosen not to disclose the full substance of those conversations.

A changing role for Portugal’s captain

The episode also raises broader questions about Ronaldo’s role within the national team.

For more than two decades, he has been one of the central figures in Portugal’s starting lineup.

The emergence of other attacking options, however, gives Jesus greater flexibility when selecting his team.

Gonçalo Ramos has now been preferred to Ronaldo at the front of the attack for the Denmark match.

Ronaldo’s absence against Norway was particularly significant because he was fit and available but remained on the bench throughout the match.

His departure from the camp before the Denmark fixture turns what had initially been a selection decision into a much larger issue for the Portuguese national team.

Jesus insists selection decisions belong to the coach

Jesus has maintained that his decisions are based on what he believes Portugal requires during individual matches.

His comments before the Denmark game were particularly direct.

Ronaldo could have been introduced if required, the coach said, but there was no guarantee that Portugal’s captain would play.

That represents a significant change for a footballer who has spent much of his international career as an automatic selection.

Jesus has nevertheless rejected suggestions that the situation represents a personal confrontation between player and coach.

Ronaldo’s subsequent decision to leave the camp means attention will now focus on whether their differing accounts can be reconciled.

Portugal prepares for Denmark without Ronaldo

Portugal must now turn its attention to Thursday’s match without its captain.

Gonçalo Ramos is expected to lead the attack as Jesus continues with the approach that helped Portugal secure its 2 to 1 victory over Norway.

Ronaldo’s departure will inevitably dominate discussion around the team, but the immediate sporting priority remains the Nations League campaign.

The squad will have to prepare for Denmark without its most experienced international player.

146 goals in 234 appearances

Whatever follows, Ronaldo’s place in Portuguese football history remains extraordinary.

He is Portugal’s record international appearance holder and record goalscorer.

Across 234 appearances for the national team, Ronaldo has scored 146 goals.

His international career has stretched across more than two decades and multiple generations of Portuguese players.

That history makes the events in Copenhagen particularly significant.

Ronaldo has experienced periods when his starting position was questioned before, but leaving the national team camp immediately after being told he would again begin on the bench represents a striking development.

Attention now turns to Ronaldo’s promised explanation

For the moment, neither Ronaldo nor Jesus has publicly described the situation as a rupture.

Jesus says there is no rift. Ronaldo says he remains dedicated to the national team.

Yet the captain has left the squad before a competitive international and has explicitly promised that he will eventually explain his reasons to the Portuguese public.

That leaves an unresolved question hanging over Portugal as the team prepares to face Denmark.

The next chapter may depend not on Thursday’s result, but on what Cristiano Ronaldo means when he says that, in due course, he will tell Portugal “the truth.”
