Lando Norris set the pace in the second free practice session at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, finishing just 0.083 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in a highly competitive session.
The McLaren driver, who is seeking to close a 34-point gap to teammate Oscar Piastri in the drivers’ standings, clocked a best lap of 1:20.083 minutes, edging out Leclerc’s late push in front of the home Ferrari fans.
Carlos Sainz, now driving for Williams, secured the third-fastest time, followed by Piastri, Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari, and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
The session was not without drama. Norris ran wide at the Variante della Roggia, while Piastri found himself in the gravel at the second Lesmo corner. The most serious incident came from Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, who lost control at Lesmo 2, triggering a red flag after sliding off the track.
For Piastri, track time was limited as he had given up his seat in the first practice session to rising talent Alex Dunne. That earlier session ended with Ferrari on top, with Hamilton leading a one-two ahead of Leclerc, delighting the Tifosi.
As qualifying approaches, the battle between McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull looks set to be decided by the finest of margins at Monza.
