Former US Vice President Mike Pence has issued a stark warning, saying he has “no doubt” that Russia will eventually attack a NATO country if it succeeds in its war against Ukraine.
Speaking on BBC Newsnight on Friday, 5 September, Pence stressed that a Russian victory in Ukraine would embolden President Vladimir Putin to expand his war into Europe. This move would trigger NATO’s collective defense obligations.
“If Russia were to cross a NATO border, the United States and our European allies would have no choice but to confront it militarily,” Pence said. He described America’s role as a “backstop” in such a scenario but insisted that European allies must be “at the forefront” of any confrontation.
The former vice president also praised recent discussions among Western allies about strengthening Kyiv’s defenses and providing long-term security guarantees. He referred to the “coalition of the willing” that has emerged around Ukraine, noting that its work “has captured Putin’s attention.”
Pence’s remarks come amid ongoing debates in Washington and across European capitals about how far the West should go in supporting Ukraine militarily and economically, especially as Russia shows no signs of scaling back its war aims.
His comments align with growing concerns from NATO leaders that Moscow could escalate aggression beyond Ukraine if not decisively stopped.
