Fermín Aldeguer delivered a commanding performance at the Indonesian Grand Prix on Sunday, securing his maiden MotoGP victory at the Mandalika Circuit. The 20-year-old Spanish rider for BK8 Gresini Racing became the second-youngest winner in MotoGP history, marking a historic day for both himself and his team.
The race was defined by early drama when Marc Márquez (Ducati Lenovo) and Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) collided on the opening lap. Bezzecchi, who had started from pole position, made contact with Márquez while attempting an aggressive overtake at Turn 6. Both riders crashed heavily and were forced to retire. Though they walked away from the incident, subsequent medical evaluations revealed that Márquez had sustained a right clavicle injury and would return to Europe for further examination and possible surgery. Bezzecchi was taken to a local hospital for additional checks.
Aldeguer’s Rise to Victory
With two of the race favorites out, Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) inherited the early lead, followed closely by Aldeguer and Luca Marini (Honda HRC Castrol). Joan Mir (Honda) briefly showed promise but crashed on the second lap, ending his race prematurely.
Aldeguer’s decisive moment came on lap seven. After a clean move on Acosta at Turn 10, he briefly lost the position but swiftly reclaimed it and began pulling away with relentless pace. By the halfway point, the young Spaniard had built a comfortable two-second gap, which he continued to extend with each lap.
Behind him, the battle for the podium intensified. Marini, Acosta, Alex Rins (Yamaha), Alex Márquez, and Brad Binder (KTM) fought wheel-to-wheel for position. Binder, who started 15th, carved through the field in one of the standout drives of the day. Alex Márquez made his move late in the race to secure third place, giving Gresini an unexpected and emotional 1–2 finish.
A Historic Win for Gresini
Aldeguer crossed the finish line 8.6 seconds ahead of Acosta, who finished second, while Alex Márquez completed the podium in third. The result delivered Gresini Racing’s first 1–2 finish in MotoGP, a milestone that underscored the team’s growing competitiveness in 2025.
“It’s a dream come true,” Aldeguer said after the race. “I’ve always imagined this moment, but to win in MotoGP so early, and in such a dominant way, is unbelievable. I owe this to the Gresini team for believing in me from the beginning.”
Strong Performances and Setbacks
Brad Binder finished an impressive fourth after charging from deep in the grid, while Luca Marini rounded out the top five. Raul Fernández (Trackhouse) took sixth, followed by Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) and Franco Morbidelli (VR46). Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46) and Alex Rins completed the top ten.
It was a weekend to forget for reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo), who crashed out while running 16th, capping off a frustrating race.
Looking Ahead
As MotoGP heads to Phillip Island for the Australian Grand Prix next weekend, attention now turns to the recovery of Márquez and Bezzecchi and whether they will be fit to race. Meanwhile, Aldeguer arrives in Oceania as the newest race winner in MotoGP and one of the brightest rising stars of the 2025 season.
